Betty M, Chris and Peggy are still around ( and attending BARA events) and Eileen M is an absolute scream - my husband and I still laugh over her comments made years ago whilst getting some jeans for her son from a local jumble sale. Too rude to print here and would not want to embarass the lad.Pity Alan moved away he was a frequent attender at BARA meetings.

The lady in white used to attend the Maudsley Day Centre at 10 Upland Road, have not seen her for years but my boss saw her a few months ago in Camberwell.

YES! I remember that shop (now a house) and the guy, who was African-Caribbean and very camp.

The cheapest Levi 501s in London at the time, apart from the Tricky Dickies (?) jeans place that used to be in the former cinema at the junction of Denmark hill and Coldharbour Lane (where the Forum now is), and which closed in the mid-eighties when TD went bankrupt. The owner of the ED jeans shop was very very weird, but I never had any problems and just ignored him and his porn. I wondered if he was ever successful in finding what he was obviously looking for, and how his tactics would be received in today's very protective society. He did good alterations at a very reasonable price though.

I used to absolutely love DeeDee's they sold such random things, and you could always get a cool keyring!

As for the white lady, a friend of mine is a CPN who used to know her, and apparently she is now on the correct medication, and is living a "normal" life. Poor thing.

the lady from Dee Dee's is still there - though they converted the shop a while back - she said the reason they closed down was some change in business rates in the eighties or nineties meant the business was no longer viable.

The word 'Aneloy's' has just struck deep into my psyche.. what was that? I used to love Marriot's toy shop, I always went there for Airfix kits, Subbuteo stuff etc (there was also a branch in Forest Hill). There was also a toy shop at the Plough too, can't remember it's name though.

I remember the toy shop on Lordship Lane, but used to prefer Zodiac Toys in Peckham (more or less opposite where Primark is (when it was BHS).

A great East Dulwich guy was Andy the hairdresser opposite the CPT next to what used to be Marie's Cafe. He was this really nice Greek guy with what looked like a c long curly perm hairstyle. He used to do my weird haircuts for me as a teenager, nice fella.

The little aquarium on Underhill was nice too.

I used to love Zodiac Toys. It's a crappy jewellery shop now. The nasty shoeshop opposite it was Ravel. Yes, Primark was BHS, Argos was Marks & Spencer, Ethel Austin was C&A, the cinema was Sainsbury's + the Clarks Factory was an old skool counter service Sainsbury's, and Jones & Higgins department store where the Aylsham Centre is now. My first ever Saturday job was at Woolworths in Rye Lane when I was 16 - ?2.80 an hour - and that was only in 1995! haha

I remember it being a good place to shop as a teeny, likewise the Wally Road had some of the coolest clothes shops at that time and now look at it.

Does anyone know what happened to Steamline motorcycles at the top of Lordship lane, I bought my first bike there in 1958 it was a really powerfull 250cc BSA CLG, if the wind was behind it could manage all of 60mph, the shop started as a single unit and soon took over several adjacent shops, the last time I saw it about 1973 it seemed to be doing well so I was supprised to see it has gone, does anyone know what happened to the owners I think they were Mike and Neal

The guy who owned it sold it off to developers. I think one of the younger guys who worked there was his son and I think he (the son) moved down to the west country, but certainly outside london.

Yes' your right about that, funny you remember it though as it was a long time ago from what i have heard from my family (way before my time).

He went on to open a restaurant on park lane just near the dorchester hotel in london and i think he is still doing quite well for himself. He was quite a nice guy from what i hear.

It was replaced by a new shop with flats above (Streamline Court) and some housing around the back (Streamline Mews).

The first of these properties was sold in December 2001 which gives a clue as to the date of the demise of what I guess was Streamline Motorcycles (rather that Steamline).

I found out recently that my father-in-law bought the whole chain of Zodiac toy shops when they went bust. Strange as I used to spend my pennies in there as a kid (he still deals in Lego and Playmobil to this day). There was also a really good but very small model shop at the start of Rye Lane.. I used to buy tiny lead tanks, lichen and stamps from him.

This brought back so many memories, Golden City did the best chips in the world, until you ate half the bag and felt sick because of all the oil...

If i may add a couple of other shops that I can recall like the bakers on LL near the police station that would sell you yesterdays cakes for pennies. The war memorabilia shop on N Cross Road. The corner shop on crawthew grove/spurling road that had all the jars of sweets and would let you pay for xmas pressies in instalments. I'm warming up now...there was a comic shop near to whats now the Irish Shop, and the video shop in the same area that would do pirate videos under the counter if you knew them well enough.

And wasn't there a kfc over the road too.. And I'm sure that the cafe next to the Palmerston was a wimpy at one stage. I remember getting a knickerbocker glory and a banana split in there. Hey try mentioning those two desserts and the Levi Man in the same sentence without coming up with certain connotations..

That sounds about right, I went to look at one of the new houses at the back, which were really very big but with postage-stamp sized gardens.

They now own Sterling Motorcycles on Stanstead Road. They mainly deal in scooters and low end bikes these days. I gor my scooter there 6 years ago and then got my Kawasaki Zephyr there 4 years ago
