DulwichFox
Do not need another Supermarket... New Crossings are needed because of the amount of traffic.. Saturday traffic worse because of the 100's cars going so Sainsburys.. Lordship Lane Red Route restricted parking killing local trade. Convinient for Sainsburys. Friends in High Places. Fox. woodrot
Well, you can't have that, but if you're an East Dulwich resident you are entitled to:a heated kidney shaped pool,a microwave oven--don't watch the food cook,a Dyna-Gym--I'll personally demonstrate it in the privacy of your own home,a king-size Titanic unsinkable Molly Brown waterbed with polybendum,a foolproof plan and an airtight alibi, real simulated Indian jewelry,a Gucci shoetree,a year's supply of antibiotics,a personally autographed picture of Randy Mantoothand Bob Dylan's new unlisted phone number,a beautifully restored 3rd Reich swizzle stick,Rosemary's baby,a dream date in kneepads with Paul Williams,a new Matador, a new mastodon,a Maverick, a Mustang, a Montego,a Merc Montclair, a Mark IV, a meteor,a Mercedes, an MG, or a Malibu,a Mort Moriarty, a Maserati, a Mac truck,a Mazda, a new Monza, or a moped,a Winnebago--Hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're giving 'em away,or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,a Las Vegas wedding,a Mexican divorce,a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,or a baby's arm holding an apple? katie1997
I can't believe this thread hasn't been lounged for having nothing to do with ED or at least sent to forum graveyard yet....Waitrose. Waitrose. Bloody Waitrose. How has ED managed without one all this time?Edited to add: what about making this a 'sticky'? Ah go on. Nick1962
As an ex-resident of what used to be a beautiful village in Kent, called Locksbottom, it is a definite NO from me! The introduction of a huge Sainsburys, simply paved the way for what has to be the worst of the worst, NETTO, and so the beginning of the end for the Village way of life. The lovely greengrocers failed to compete, together with a dozen or so other small family run businesses that had previously given Locksbottom its charm and character. The empty shops on Princess Parade are testament to just how badly the small businesses suffered and the daily traffic jams and hiked up parking charges are all part of the slow death. We have something unique in East Dulwich and should be proud of it. What is wrong with walking five minutes to Sainsburys if you really need the shot of Corporate shopping? deserted
Well you can say goodbye to William Rose Butchers and the East Dulwich Deli for a kick off if either of these open on Lordship Lane. As well as all the other independent grocers.Personally I think the local pubs are rubbish and overpriced and we need a Witherspoons. There are not nearly enough shopping options for mobile phones so we need lots of mobile phone shops. Frankly it's completely backwards and culturally elite that there's no Mcdonalds on Lordship Lane. Maybe a subway or Primark, too. Then Lordship lane can look *exactly* like every other high street in England. Or, if we're going to be snobs, we can only allow 'aspirational' chains and make sure that East Dulwich *really* turns into a little Kensington. dontpanic
I vote No Thanks. LL is unique, we have no need to use this as an excuse that it would attract more independents. We have a thriving street with lots of lovely independent shops. I think its a miracle given the state of most high streets, adnm we shoudl eb incredibly wary of changing the balance of that.More important is a guarantee that parking will remain free in and around Lordship lane as this is crucial. Lowlander
So is there a poll we can link to? Or a consensus without me (apologies for laziness) having to wade through 29 pages?Personally I think we have more than enough supermarkets although I'd be willing to sacrifice Sainos for a Waitrose. civilservant
why would we need a poll? and what would it achieve?it's a commercial decision for the supermarkets after allif someone wants a local Waitrose, then why don't they just pay whatever it takes to buy a house near one?29 yet? Senor Chevalier
A poll would have the advantage of producing a wad of data for people to analyse and cut in different ways to construct purportedly evidence-based arguments. That then brings the stats geeks into play with their oneupmanship and forensic analysis of eachother's views and then we won't be talking a mere 29 pages, we'll be heading towards 40 especially if diagrams and charts are deployed....ETA: there, done it. natthecat
No - ED is pretty unusual in London and indeed elsewhere because of the independent shops which is why I love it. We really are bucking national trends.Wonderful though Waitrose and M&S are, they represent huge corporate economies of scale and buying power and most of us can go not too far to find them. ED would really start to lose identity if they come in. LivingInEastDulwich
Definitely No! Anyone who likes M&S or Waitrose can order online or get it on the way home at the train station. Supporting ED's independent stores is what we should do!
