Lordship 516
@ red devilMay will already have been in negotiations with the DUP i regard to the NI assembly but I think she will not have experienced how intransigent the DUP might be. These are evangelical christian fundamentalists steeped in a 19th century baptist separatist culture of exclusion.May will have a lot of fun with these 'good' people. In what universe do you manufacture 'the greatest peacetime challenge this country has ever faced' (or words to that effect), and then, without so much as a blush, put your 'Churchill cloak' on? Jenny1
Yes. He made a similar point on World At One. The UK government cannot function as the honest broker in the NI power sharing agreement (which of course has hit the rocks), it it's dependent on one of the parties involved for it's own political survival. If she doesn't I think she'll stand down in 2 years IF they last that long - highly unlikely without internal rebellion, coalition collapse, a Brexit/Economic crisisIf Corbyn is sensible he'll bring back talent into the shadow cabinet - as they'll come crawling backLabour in govt by 2022, if not before, I reckon. I wonder if she is experiencing some fundamental cognitive dissonance. Perhaps she has persuaded herself that she is nothing to do with the loss.Rumours are that Boris and Davies are already campaigning for the leadership - I guess they hope that no one will remember their role in this fiasco. Cabinet pretty much as before - i.e. this is a caretaker administration until they can find someone they think can take on Corbyn. I fear if it is a Brexiter they will lose even more seats.Very interesting reading The Times today (I always wear oven gloves on such occasions). May will not be forgiven by the establishment. TheCat
While it is a broadly good thing that the young voter turnout was high, I must say, watching the news tonight, I'm getting a little irritated with 'young people' telling us all how much more they 'care' about others and a fair society....Note to 'youth'...most people care a lot. BrandNewGuy
And we should be cautious about this youth effect until the numbers have actually been crunched. When David Lammy last night tweeted about a 72% turnout among 18-25 year olds, I wondered exactly how he could have got that information so quickly given that it didn't factor into the exit poll. Turned out it was a made-up figure.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-40220032 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/149762-8-june/page/42/#findComment-1144910 Share on other sites

What are you saying? Is it that you think that promising to abolish tuition fees might have mobilised the educated student vote? Is it that triple locks on pensions were no such thing? Were parents bribed by Labour when they said they would not abolish free school meals? Why can't I understand any of your points? The speech she gave post Queenie meeting was the most deluded nonsense I've ever heard. I think she read out the victory speech and hoped no one noticed. In my opinion (worthless, I know), she and the likes of Davis, IDS and co. treated the electorate with such contempt that this was inevitable. Brexit means Brexit, strong and stable, all out of the "shut up and let the big people get on with it" textbook.Arrogant beyond belief. As a window into the Mayfair club Tory heartland we even got the bring back Foxhunting nonsense. Yeah, unite the country, dicks.Strong and Stable, my arse. This is what caused the provisional IRA to come into existence - not some malicious death wish that the republican population wanted so they could cause trouble. This will be what the DUP will attempt to re-engineer in some manner - domination in NI regardless of & with contempt for the Good Friday Agreement. Fascism under a christian right banner & hatred a la KKK.Foster is not a Free Presbyterian but is driven by their ideology as they dominate the party & if she dared to deviate from their hateful stance she would soon be out on her ear.May is dancing with a fairly despicable devil & it will bite her on thearse. rendelharris
So we either tell young people to start being middle aged as soon as they turn eighteen, or take the vote away until life has ground the idealism out of them? Personally, as a middle aged cynical old git, I say let's celebrate our youth, especially if they're bothered enough to get involved in activism - more than most of us (including me) do. They've got a lifetime to get old in, they're only young once.
