I'm torn on this whole thing. I totally agree with what you say there Blinder, you're spot on, and I want to stop the DMC from profiting greatly from the loss of business to other local pharmacies. I also think a needle exchange would be better placed on the main road.

However, I can't bring myself to support a cause based on "not in my back yard" politics. I'm sure a lot of people are against this for good reasons, but there are plenty who are against it, not because they really know anything about it, but simply because they don't want "that type of person on our streets".

As an aside, I'm not sure this has been mentioned, as I couldn't handle reading this whole thread, but according to the petition, local pharmacies have agreed to take it in turns to stay open late.

Much like Keef, I too can't bring myself to support "not in my back yard" politics.

There are drug users in East Dulwich, regardless of whether this syringe exchange or methadone service is agreed. It the PCT hasn't undertaken the legally required consultation then they should be held to account and made to do it, but it doesn't then follow that the NIMBYs should get their way.

I learned this evening that at least one rough sleeping drug user has been identified as sleeping in the private grounds of a property, part of which is a nursery. I suspect this person is not alone in the area, and I'd far rather that his or her used 'works' were safely and discreetly deposited at a needle exchange, than shared with other users or dumped where unsuspecting people could suffer sharp injuries.

I haven't quite made up my mind about methadone as a treatment, but while drug rehabilitation services remain so under resourced in comparison to the problem and the resulting need, I can't really see this form of treatment being currently ruled out completely.

I thought I would come and post a reply to AllforNun's Nazi post (which, although I might be just missing it, seems to have disappeared from the thread), and also a reply to Snorky's post.

Where's AllforNun's post? The one where she/he was trying to compare people signing the petition to Nazis'? Mr Admin - I didn't realise you might remove it before I could reply. Is it still here somewhere??? This thread is so long now its too hard to find stuff on it. I'm getting all dazed and confused again!

Thin edge of wedge .

The crux of this particalar argument seems to down to opinion as to whether a certain medical practice is proposing to do this for the right reasons - agt least that is how the petition aspect is being sold.

I think this is a red herring people - the argument about the medical cetre may be a legitimate depending on your perspective at this point , but Im sure if the plan was radically altered to remove the medical centre from the equation, this would not be the end of the matter - other proposals , im sure, would hardly be welcomed

The thought of dirty skagheads, going cold turkey dripping with AIDS and lurking in parks waiting for their "man" is at the root of the problem I think - they are not welcome here - not in the new improved ED with the vibrant Lordship lane and only 11 mins away from London bridge station.

There have always been drug users in SE22, you may not notice them - they look like normal human beings - they may be living next door to you - not all drug fiends live in fetid crack houses and burgle for a living.some have jobs and families- they live among us.

There always will be drug users in SE22- look at the location and depravation aropund us, the proximity to the maudsley -accept the problem exists and work with it - trying to drive them out by proxy isnt going to work.

You're joking. What offending posts? I've been following this thread with a certain degree of interest and I certainly can't remember seeing anything that could possibly have caused offence. If it was CWALD's very moving outpouring of personal suffering which seems to have been removed then I am absolutely flabbergasted.

Actually it was only two posts (the second one was Mockneys talking about Godwin's law). We tend to get a few complaints when people liken things to the Nazis and rightly so. So for the record the offending post by AllforNun (that people complained about and so was removed) said the following, which I believe in this context does not have the offensive clout as it did before:

"Actually the Nazis were a large, almost country size group of people, who became so entrenched in their beliefs that their way was the right way, and everyone else was of a lesser class it led to ....

Of course when the bubble burst, they were left, by dint of history, looking pretty evil.

Lets hope one day, standing in Lordship Lane, organic plastic wellies on your feet, British latecinno' in one hand petition in the other you do not hear the sounds of the distance wall that you have built up around yourself come crashing down. Only history and time will tell."

The forum is a place that is informative (and fun), if people get offended by something we act on it if necessary. There's about 400-500 posts a day and we don't know which ones offend people so we have to rely on people reporting them to us. We usually leave a "post removed" notice and we don't like spoiling the flow of a thread so we have to make a judgement call every now and then. It's not easy and perhaps sometimes we get it wrong, we don't censor things but we are ruled by common sense so please bear with us sometimes as that's not always agreeable to everyone. I hope that makes sense.

Now, back to "Syringe Exchange/Methadone Services: Crystal Palace Rd ? Petition" if you please

Thanx Jah - I edited mine because I needed to say it at the time, but was not very comfortable about it being on permanant display on a public forum.

I'm standing as the Green Party candidate against the rightious Mr Hughes in the next general election, after all!

Green Party know about dodgy past and think it's great, by the way.

Chav - would you consider standing as a Green candidate in the local elections? Last time around I was really surprised to se no Green candidates for the East Dulwich ward. I'm sure they'd do very well and would certainly have my vote :))

I think there was a f"(K up with getting the papers in on time!

The person who was going to stand was unable to because of some techincality or timekeeping something like that, but you should join up and stand yourself!

Democracy should be about participation, instead of being the spectator sport it is at present!

Back to a Needle exchange.

If through this thread we have discovered that people will generally react negatively to the thought of an Exchange. what then should be done. Should the local council capitulate to one group while ignoring the other? or should everyone accept that they are needed.

Is Gumboots just a convenient excuse ? I just can not see how DMP which probably treats people with a whole range of illnesses, is suddenly putting children at any more risk with a needle exchange. People have mentioned putting it in Lordship Lane but surely there are more children walking up and down than in CPR?

Thread locked - now unlocked again.

This is obviously a topic of heated debate, please try to stay on topic and do not pro-actively insult others or try and get a rise from others. It's not good.
