We have suggested that it would be more appropriate if the existing pharmacists could agree amongst themselves to have a rota system of late night opening - there are allegedly 5 in east Dulwich - they could each take a night and rotate at weekends. Why not put a pharmacy in SELDOC - more logical - plenty of staff around in the surgery and you also have the out of hours social workers on same site- it would provide better security than a quiet residential street. The PCT have ruled that there is not a need for another pharmacy in this locality - but those who are determined to add another pharmacy must provide the 100 hours needle exchange.

In reply to another readers 'rant' re representing the people it perports to. We represent council tenants,leaseholder, private and housing association tenants and owner occupiers from all cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Many of our members have english as a second language. On our committee, we have 3 people with disabilities, 3 Muslim. 1 Buddist, many of us are carers, some are working,some are on benefits (unemployment/sickness/retirement), we have tenants, leaseholders and owner occupiers. Many of our members have enduring mental health problems, long term sickness, or live in poor housing conditions.

We represent a good cross section of the local population - we might have a few NIMBYs on our patch as well.

I have no problem finding an solution that ensures drug rehabilitation for those in need. Surely we all want that. The alternative is far worse.

But why in this debate must we automatically assume those suffering the ill effects of drug abuse are to have rights far and above those who are now a) paying for their rehab and other strains on the system and b) children with no voice of their own.

I think there is reasonable thought in the middle here. But those on the extreme of 'give drug abusers paramount rights' are as silly as those saying 'no drug rehab in my backyard'.

We are talking about an individual walking into a pharmacy and then walking away again. Yep. The biggest to date has been Peckham. And Elephant is on the horizon to lead the UK.

In the case of ED, all investment (our tax money) has been paid back probably 10 fold by taxes paid by the new businesses and property values increasing. That's gentrification. A little investment by Gov't (tax) pays back huge.

Regeneration is when our tax money pays to improve areas destroyed by those living there. It doesn't really pay for itself. It's basically a subsidy. Peckham. My favourite is Bellendon, which falls in the middle. Subsidy to prop up a white middle class enclave and it still can't stand on its own. We're still subsidizing. A bit of an exception.

Elephant wasn't really helped by the architects and planners of the 60's and 70's was it now? Doesn't really engender pride in your surroundings living there. Any improvement that area can get will be a good thing. (lived there 15 years)

If you drop people in an run down area, fail to provide any decent schools, leave parks like the Rye in an absolute shite state for years, provide absolutely no decent facilities, only give people a decent library in the year 2000 then what do you think might happen, Adults/Kids grow up surrounded by signs that no one wants them, trust's them or believes in them. Your whole point was tax dollars benefit me as much as anyone else because 'council's pour millions to gentrify communities'. That simply isn't true. Full Stop. Not true. Gov't money in Southwark alone has poured into Peckham and still is being used today to subsidise to keep things alive that on paper, the Council's own plan, should've weened off. As for ED, it continues to thrive because investment breeds more investment and on paper, and this can't be disputed, the invested tax money has spawned a huge return of more tax money.

people live in dwellings, dwellings are set at pretty equal distances, a majority of these people living in these dwellings pay taxes, so the tax intake is spread roughly evenly. The fact that central government has focused plans for areas means that when those long term strategies fail those areas will of course need more money, and like your "investment breeds investment", failure breeds failure.

If I remember righly in 1996/7 there was a police vehicle regulary parked out side what is now the EDT, so ED is still pretty green in terms of thriving. Hence the arrival of Foxtons. No doubt the residents of Dulwich Village used to look upon you like you now seem to look on Peckham.

In one of my previous messages i stated that SLP did not use our Press Release- however, my colleagues have pointed out that they are asking for people's views about the proposals, so are likely to be running with the story in future additions of SLP.

For those of you who have e mailed us on [email protected] concerning petitions - there are several going around at the moment in shops, cafes and from groups meeting at the East Dulwich Community Centre. The closing date for these petitions is 2nd November. If you are running a petition please reply by PM and we will arrange to collect around 2/11/07 and deliver it to the PCT.

I pressumed all bets were off when Maurice told Chavlawdegree, to "get a law degree, Get a family and get a mortgage" as well as a whole host of other abusive comments about Peckham residents and people with addictions. Some comments like "white middle class enclave" in reference to Bellendon road also potentially lead down an unpleasant avenue. Apologies all 'round if I offend, but I am a member of the community with valid views. Bellendon, in my opinion, is a white middle class enclave propped up by subsidy. Read their reports. It's all there in black and white. The plan to ween them off funding has failed.

On topic, as (properly) chided by the Admin, I believe there is a valid argument to consider taxpayers should have a say in how their money is spent. Therefore a proper consultation re: the Syringe Exchange should allow those living nearby a say.

As for the admin's input, I do believe mine have been factual arguments (with some admitted colourful language), while others chided do seem to get personal and have a lot of anger about opposing views. But I've a thick skin admin. I sleep well at night.

- subsidies for failing financial institutions

- BAE systems jobs

- The war on 'Terror'

- Faith schools

- tax concessions for private schools & private hospitals

- Tax concession on airline fuel

- subsidies for failed/failing PFI's eg Metronet (take them all back into public ownership)

- Fatcat payouts for directors of failed/failing PFI's

- ?360 per week, per room paid for with Housing benefit, instead of the ?60 they could get normally, for exploitative landlords who provide a crappy breakfast and call their proprty a hostel

- Contracts for friends of the politicians to build, supply, and maintain schools/hospitals/transport/sport facilities/the lottery etc

and i'll think of a few more later, in the meantime, I'm sure a few of you will have some ideas of your own!
