I scanned a load of photos using a printer I had bought partly because it specifically did that.

However my son in law told me that the resolution was not high enough and it would be better to have them done by a specialist (which I never got round to).

If you are not bothered about that because you just want the memories, then that wouldn't matter, and I have no idea how much it would cost to have them done elsewhere (or even if my son in law was right) but it's something you might want to take into account.

And Fox is right, it's a very boring job and dust on the scans is not what you want ...

Thanks Foxy, that's a kind offer. I think I have around 500-1000 (original typo) as I was quite a prolific photographer at the time. I do have a scanner, but not the time or patience to remove dust and dirt.

There are some online options but I don't want to risk sending them by post, rather do it myself or pay someone in south London.

For negatives I could never find a cost effective option for sending them out. I bought a Epson v500 negative scanner and although it's really really time consuming it is very effective. It has IR scratch and dust removal that seems to work pretty well. I have a little air puffer to clean the negatives before I scan them and a light box to weed out the out of focus photos of hedges and flowers that my gran used to take to use up a roll!

I've done about 3000 35mm and medium format negatives (20+ years of family photos) and it was a year long project. I still have a thousand 110s/16mm to do which is a project for this year.

    • This is NEXT WEDNESDAY 11 June! Just turn up if you prefer not to give prior notice! The Palmerston from  7pm, turn left as you come in! (If you have been hiding under a rock, The Palmerston is the pub on Lordship Lane on the corner of North Cross Road).
    • Yes, at first I assumed that the bin men had taken flowering plants from my front garden while getting at my brown food bin, instead of reaching over the wall. I was very confused as I couldn't see any obvious gaps. Surely taking Toadflax from a resident's wall is not part of the council's remit? What next, are they going to come round and trim hedges in front gardens? 🤬
    • Oh, so that was the council.  Someone ripped some lovely flowering Toadflax from our wall and threw it in the gutter.  I assumed that a child had done it.  How strange?
    • Black open bag found on pavement on Goodrich Road this morning filled with electrical type items. Please message me if yours with description of what should be inside. Thanks
