Ridgley
Personally when I go to a pub, the last thing I want to watch is any sort of TV I like to catch up with my friends and also interact with other people I feel that we do little of that this day being in a digital age families not having meals together etc?. so I see the pub for me as a social thing. Keef
Sean, I was kind of joking about the whole manly pub thing.I basically agree with Ridgley, I like to go and chat, with a bit of background music on. I go and watch footy, because I don't have sky, but I still arge that sporting events are a bit different. SeanMacGabhann
Oh I know you had your tongue in cheek, and I only replied because I thought it was ironic, given other recent ?old skool? pub threads that of all the pubs with a history of a big screen it was the Wishing Well. I know lot?s of people are going to be intrinsically against the idea, but doing it in other countries you can see how much MORE sociable people are in these places when strangers have a common interest for a while. I?m not trying to enforce it on anyone, but if one pub out of a bazillion is giving it a go I don?t see why people are so quick to dismiss it either. I hear the ?I go to the pub because?..? lines, but in my experience these things all happen anyway Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14533-pubs-that-show-the-x-factor/page/2/#findComment-388016 Share on other sites
Cassius
In Turkey the TV is always on but it seems to always be football, in Italy it is always on but the sound is invariably off, more like wallpaper than actual watching of tv. RosieH
To be honest, I've no interest in watching any telly in the pub. But I take massive issue with the idea that it's alright for football but not for something else. Just because you don't like a thing, doesn't mean that others who do shouldn't enjoy it.And anyone who disagrees with me, can, frankly, shove it up their arse. Keef
Well, having sat on it, I shall now get one with disagreeing with you.Sporting events, for which a pub has to pay a high premium to show, are not the same thig as Saturday night entertainment, that is shown on terrestrial telly. Cassius
I agree - the main difference between football and the X-factor is that many of the games shown in the pub are only available on Sky and contrary to common belief NOT everyone has Sky. The X-factor on the other hand as Keef points out is on terrestrial and therefore there is no need to show it in the pub. Michael Palaeologus
I absolutely agree with Rosie, apart from the arse related stuffing bit.I enjoy watching rugby in a pub but not football because I dont like football; to be specific I cant stand the hyperbole and load of football related old wank that is spouted by otherwise wise and sensible folk. Much of modern sport (especially football) is nothing more than popular entertainment. Overpaid, morally corrupt and stupid participants, their grasping managers, owners who are interested in money and not in the content and fans who should know better. Therefore showing X-Factor or Celebrity Come Dancing in a pub as showing a Premiership football game. At least the fans of such shows enjoy the entertainment with a tongue firmly in their cheeks and get the joke. Sadly footie fans are incapable of seeing the absurdity of the beautiful game. Keef
But you enjoy watching the rugby internationals, most of which are on Sky, hence my point. DulwichFox
I have been in The Bishop and the Actress when sport is on with the sound turned down and music playing over speakers. Was told that some people object to the sound of the Football. Not been to The Victoria when the Xfactor is on. Do they show xfactor with no sound to please those customers who don't want to hear it. Jah Lush
What Keef said.RosieH Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> To be honest, I've no interest in watching any telly in the pub. > Now she tells us. > And anyone who disagrees with me, can, frankly,> shove it up their arse.Nice.The pub is a place to socialise, enjoy and drink with friends not a place to sit down and watch telly. You can do that at home. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14533-pubs-that-show-the-x-factor/page/2/#findComment-388087 Share on other sites
Keef
And another thing. I would rather they turn the football (or anything else) off, than have it on with no sound. Very frustrating that you can't hear it, and get in to it, but very distracting from your conversation. Michael Palaeologus
Keef Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> But you enjoy watching the rugby internationals,> most of which are on Sky, hence my point.Absolutely Keef. I wasnt arguing that Football shouldnt be shown on pub TV, just that there is no difference between sport and any other form of light entertainment in this regard. The argument that Sport is in someway special (in a good way) is deeply flawed. Jah Lush
That's balls MP.As Keef has rightly pointed out. A lot of people do not have Sky so tend to watch sport in the pub that has a TV/Screen. The difference is that X-Factor and its ilk is on a major terrestrial channel so anyone can watch that at home if they so desire. flapjackdavey
I agree with Mr Lush ... why would anybody want to go out and watch the XFactor in a pub ... or indeed anywhere at all , but then each to there own etc etc Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14533-pubs-that-show-the-x-factor/page/2/#findComment-388132 Share on other sites

Michael Palaeologus
Thank you Mockney. Quite so.There are many things that are only on Sky. That fact in and of itself isnt a reason to put them all on pub TVs.If soccer was on terrestrial TV it would still be shown in pubs. The fact that Sky has a monopoly for live soccer doesnt make it "special", it just shows that money is the priority of those selling the licence. It annoys me that the RFU and ECB have come to similar deals with the Dirty Digger. They are money grubbing old farts too.I enjoy watching rugby and cricket in a pub. I have no problem with those that similarly wish to watch soccer, I just dont like the game. However there is no qualitative difference between sport and light entertainment, thats what spectator sport is. Entertainment. For those for whom soccer is "their life" need to get one. RosieH
Heh, sorry Jah, was having a bad day. Unlike some people, I actually managed to haul my ass into work today, and it all went a bit downhill from there. But your argument about Sky is a little spurious. Are you football-heads really saying that the only games you watch down the pub are the ones you can't get on terrestrial?Watching football down the pub is some kind of male bonding ritual that I don't get but respect your right to enjoy (and some of you know I speak the truth). So why not afford the singing and dancing fans the same pleasure? They can get all high-fivey when Matt hits top C, and shout for the ref when Cheryl refuses to vote. It's all good, it's all nice. No need for ire. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14533-pubs-that-show-the-x-factor/page/2/#findComment-388229 Share on other sites

victoria_inn
we do show xfactor every saturday with the sound on. we play it in the rear of the pub & it is extremely popular. for those that don't want to watch it they can sit in the front area of the bar without being exposed to hearing it or even having to see it. everyone is happy. http://tiny.cc/wqheklook at all the smiling faces...
