I still think a proper steak restaurant would do very well. An independent like Buen Ayre (best steaks in town for my money and very reasonable) in Broadway Market, Hackney, or even a Hawksmoor. They would have no proper competition.

They are launching (Hawksmoor) the new Foxlow in Soho. New look and menu, and if that does the things it needs to do, then there's a roll out of that model.

In theory that could make a case for a Foxlow Dulwich. However, they closed the one in Stoke Newington recently.

Yep, that sort of price point is more appropriate for a neighbourhood restaurant. Although I can't help thinking that with a steak restaurant, the selling point is primarily the quality of the meat, and rapid expansion could potentially compromise that..

And I'd happily take you up on that bet :-) There's nowhere near the right footfall in DV ? all their other branches are central and do significant business all week. Hawksmoor in the Village on a wet Tuesday evening in November will be empty. In addition, DV's restaurants are mediocre, which seems to suit the Dulwich Estate and the local population, who probably do their eating out in the West End and City.

..and of course East Dulwich..

Foxy

Yes and no. Lordship Lane seems to support a thriving mix of places to eat out. Not all are going to suit everyone's tastes and if I want 'fine dining', I'll probably head for one of my favourite eateries in town rather than locally.
Long before it was Caf? Rouge in Dulwich Village for many years it was The London Steak House. It was considered quite posh, certainly too posh for my mum and dad as we never ate there. I remember they had a doorman in livery outside when I lived on Pickwick Road throughout in the 60s and 70s. I can't remember when it closed, probably sometime in the 80s or early 90s.

Popped in to Memsaab this morning to chat with new owner.

Lot of work to do. They are waiting for electricity to be re-connected.

New sign ordered.. so it's all in hand..

Gave me a lot of flyers to hand out. Menu will be available soon.

They are offering 30% off (Food) for a limited period..

Looking forward to this new addition.

DulwichFox

Their Facebook page says they are offering 40% off food at their grand opening:

As the grand opening getting close by and we are sincerely waiting to serve you great authentic quality Indian food. To do us the honour to serve you please book your table by calling on 07969 994122 to get the 40% off on food

But underneath the text they have a picture of their flyer (which I have just received through my door this morning) which says the special offer at their grand opening is 30% off food.

So which is it?

ETA: Oh, just seen a note on the back of the flyer - thanks Foxy! :)

Foxy is a regular patron of Indian Restaurants locally, and his loyalty has gained him invaluable access to restaurant owners around the area, who respect his opinion. We should all be grateful he uses this forum as a means to provide behind the scenes information, we would otherwise be unaware of. Thankyou Foxy.

Louisa.

I'm sure you've been called worse. I've marked you down as the Forum's official Curry Correspondent as it would appear you eat nothing else.

I've just passed the establishment in question.

Apart from the Xoco sign still there (understandable if they haven't got the new Memsaab one yet) there is still a Xoco menu in the window, and nothing at all to say the place has changed hands, let alone to promote their "grand opening" in just a week's time.

Surely at least they could take the old menu out and put some kind of notice in the window?!
