womanofdulwich
? technically only smokeless fuel. practically, dry wood or coal, broken up pallets, old bank statements. garages and diy shops sell coal/ wood. be careful your fireplace is safe first though- you can get a chimney sweep to clean it- make sure you are not going to kill yourselves with toxic smoke.. Townleygreen
You can usually find bags of smokeless fuel (coal) for sale in some petrol stations. I bought some from the Total garage at Cobb's corner in Sydenham. Who was not best pleased when she eventually found out.I burn all kinds of wood in my (smokeless zone approved) stove. Toasty. Far more environment-friendly than coal or similar. Avoid MDF and other composites (Ikea-ware) - they are full of glue and other noxious things: bad for you, bad for the environment. But you must get your chimney swept before you burn anything. Magpie
I may be a failure as an open fire owner, but I just can't get smokeless fuel to actually get going even with kindling, paper, cardboard etc. I know its meant to be hotter than real coal, but real coal burns, while the smokeless stuff doesn't. Any tips? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14325-fireplace-question/#findComment-383215 Share on other sites
