Best Family Frendly Sunday Lunch Pub in East Dulwich?

Recommended Posts

The Herne Tavern. No smoking, children's playground, lots of other kids there to abuse ;-)

The Vale, for all its sins, is very tolerant with kids, as is the Crown and Greyhound in the Village which has an outside space, but I don't recall a playground.

The Palmerston is always full of children on a Sunday. Never tasted the roast (I've never made it past the front door on a sunday before feeling the need to eat somewhere else - my hungover, smoke riddled style doesn't sit well with family diners), but I have heard that it is good, and cheaper than their usual faer.

Toss up between the Herne Tavern & Crown and Greyhound (though technically the latter's disqualified as it's not in ED)

Thinking ahead to the summer I think the Herne's going to be doing a roaring trade. Playground and "Teletubby" landscaped garden for the kids, gastronosh for mum and dad.

The Dog is ever popular with families. Plenty of seats outside in garden where you can witness little darlings making mudpies out of mineral water at two quid a glass. No playground but they do have a stock of giant sized board games.

If I had to chose I'd go for the Herne, it's got the edge foodwise and the garden in The Dog's looking a bit tatty nowadays.

If the Dog and the White Horse are allowed in - how about the Rye Hotel? Can get v smokey indoors, but think there is a family friendly bit out the back. Competition for tables can get quite intense and waiting times for food gets quite long as a result (but they are always honest up front about this). Food is excellent - always worth waiting for.
The Star used to be one the best value-for-money eateries in South-East London - but I don't think it opens on Sundays any more and I have not been since they tarted it up (ie. put in a counter and a big pladstic menu, bolt-down furniture, sacked the waitrsses etc)

The rye hotel is great for sunday lunch, no smoking bar area and loads of space.

Avoid the Bellenden Brasserie, ate there last week, ordered burger having checked it was homemade, yes was the reply, it wasnt! frozen bad quality burger with a slice of processed plastic cheese, microwaved chips all bad!!

6 people all refused to eat food, they offered a return visit for free, i think not!!

    • How on earth is this possible when Rye Lane post office has already been lost? Where am I supposed to go now?? Peckham Post Office is awful and too far.  Krystal’s doesn’t even provide all the services that east dulwich does, so that’s a dud.
    • Indeed ianr, I didn't have time to include all Royal Mail options, thanks for that extra bit, they have been spot on for me, I use them a lot and have never had any issues with delivery, touch wood!
    • People are switching to electric cars irrespective of fuel prices.  100s of millions that could be spent on hospitals and schools for example have been lost due to fuel duty freezes and a supposedly temporary reduction.  Fuel is relatively cheap at the moment.  With a stonking majority when is it time to rightly take on motorists? Farming, I simply referred to Paul Johnson of the IFS who knows more about the economy that you, I and Truss will ever know. Food?  Au contraire.  It's too cheap, too poor quality and our farmers are squeezed by the supermarkets and unnatural desire to keep it cheap.  A lot less takeaways and more home cooking with decent often home produced, food should benefit most in our society. Be honest you do t like Labour.
    • In fact there was a promotional leaflet came through the letter box today, for sending by RM's parcel post by buying online.  There are also options mentioned for having the labels printed  at a Collect+ store or at a Parcel Locker.  More info at https://www.royalmail.com/.
