Guest
Can anyone recommend the best children friendly pub for Sunday Lunch in East Dulwich? Huguenot
The Herne Tavern. No smoking, children's playground, lots of other kids there to abuse ;-)The Vale, for all its sins, is very tolerant with kids, as is the Crown and Greyhound in the Village which has an outside space, but I don't recall a playground. CrystalClear
The Palmerston is always full of children on a Sunday. Never tasted the roast (I've never made it past the front door on a sunday before feeling the need to eat somewhere else - my hungover, smoke riddled style doesn't sit well with family diners), but I have heard that it is good, and cheaper than their usual faer. dulwichmum
The Crown and Greyhound in the Village - perfect. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/142-best-family-frendly-sunday-lunch-pub-in-east-dulwich/#findComment-1542 Share on other sites
Mikey
Toss up between the Herne Tavern & Crown and Greyhound (though technically the latter's disqualified as it's not in ED)Thinking ahead to the summer I think the Herne's going to be doing a roaring trade. Playground and "Teletubby" landscaped garden for the kids, gastronosh for mum and dad.The Dog is ever popular with families. Plenty of seats outside in garden where you can witness little darlings making mudpies out of mineral water at two quid a glass. No playground but they do have a stock of giant sized board games. If I had to chose I'd go for the Herne, it's got the edge foodwise and the garden in The Dog's looking a bit tatty nowadays. all_star
If the Dog and the White Horse are allowed in - how about the Rye Hotel? Can get v smokey indoors, but think there is a family friendly bit out the back. Competition for tables can get quite intense and waiting times for food gets quite long as a result (but they are always honest up front about this). Food is excellent - always worth waiting for. Michael Palaeologus
What about the Star cafe on Peckham Rye (Peckham end)? Been ages since I went for sunday lunch, but from what I remember, what it lacked in sophistication in made up for in quantity. batdog
Definitely The Rye Hotel : it is NOT a kindergarden but very family friendly especially on Sundays and some of the best food around. Guest
The Star used to be one the best value-for-money eateries in South-East London - but I don't think it opens on Sundays any more and I have not been since they tarted it up (ie. put in a counter and a big pladstic menu, bolt-down furniture, sacked the waitrsses etc) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/142-best-family-frendly-sunday-lunch-pub-in-east-dulwich/#findComment-2005 Share on other sites
all_star
The rye hotel is great for sunday lunch, no smoking bar area and loads of space.Avoid the Bellenden Brasserie, ate there last week, ordered burger having checked it was homemade, yes was the reply, it wasnt! frozen bad quality burger with a slice of processed plastic cheese, microwaved chips all bad!!6 people all refused to eat food, they offered a return visit for free, i think not!! Ant
Last time I ate at the Crown and Greyhound the food was terrible - worst I've eaten in a very long time. That was a while ago now, so it may well have improved. I'll wait to hear from someone else before risking it myself though. snorky
Dulwich resturants ( there are actually precious few of them due to the vice like grasp of the Estate ) are invariably stuffed to bursting with thrusting inhabitants of the surrounding environs rather than Village inmates themselves. Ant
I don't know, I quite liked "thrusting inhabitants" myself. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/142-best-family-frendly-sunday-lunch-pub-in-east-dulwich/#findComment-2232 Share on other sites
