SeanMacGabhann
South London just doesn't fare well with music venues that would attract decent bands. If, by decent, you mean pulling crowds of hundreds rather than dozensWhen teh Mean Fiddler org was in it's pomp and owned most of the small to mid-level venues in London they bought The Clapham Grand and REALLY pushed it - but without a tube people just don't do it enough sadlyEven if all that didn't matter, physically there is nowhere suitable is there? What was the Odeon site possibly but that's too lateThis is all toying with my drams anyway - stop it. The thought of a venue where I didn't have to travel miles home afterwards is too much Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1412-what-does-lordship-lane-really-need/page/2/#findComment-38369 Share on other sites
Jeremy
I think people are talking about a small pub-style venue... maybe 100 capacity max. But even then, it would struggle in ED with it's below-par public transport. On the other hand... a tube would be great, but I have no desire to see the property prices rocket yet further! James
I reckon a small venue would do okay. We're near enough to Brixton and Goldsmiths (spawn of Blur, Klaxons etc.) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1412-what-does-lordship-lane-really-need/page/2/#findComment-38376 Share on other sites
Rolo Tomasi
Independent Cinema with a bar. Nothing too huge, 4 maybe 5 screens. Jah Lush
I remember the days of the Clapham Grand Sean and it was a great venue. Saw The Fall there and a recharged Dr Feelgood before Lee Brilleaux sadly snuffed it. I suppose I could dream too. For instance The Capitol in Forest Hill (dread Weatherspoons that it is now) used to be a cinema/theatre that played host to the likes of the Stones and the Who in the early 60s and I can't see why that can't be revived as a venue for bands. Or then again where the police station is. Knock it down and we'll have a little place like the Camden Underworld, that'd do me. James
How about a small music venue with an M&S food hall in the basement? *Bob*
Ahhh... how I miss my trips to the Odeon in Streatham. In my opinion, no cinematic experience is complete without showers of popcorn and a waft of skunk from the seats at the back every few minutes. Keef
I played the Clapham Grand a couple of times, but it's too big to be a small venue, and vice versa. We flogged loads of tickets, as did the other bands, but there was no way we'd get a couple of thousand in there, so it still seemed pretty empty. However, it's not really big enough to attract big names. Shame, as it is a good place.Something the size of the half moon, or the amersham arms would be a good start. Marmora Man
Could do with a bookshop where it's comfortable to browse, where staff appear interested, where it's possible to sit and sip a good coffee and even maybe eat a cake or two. A cross between the two Dulwich bookshops (One in the Village proper and one on the strip in West Dulwich) and Chandelier. If they also had a decent selection of DVDs (ideally including classic films), music and instruments for sale and evening events such as poetry readings, discussions and live music it would be near perfect. I would / could waste a lot of time and spend a lot of money in such a place. East Dulwich Angst
A record & cd store. Don't think we've ever had one!! Except when the electrical shop at the Plough used to sell a few 7" many many many moons ago. I know we are in the age of the download now but there is nothing like holding an album & popping it in a cd player or on a record player. :)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1412-what-does-lordship-lane-really-need/page/2/#findComment-38405 Share on other sites

macroban
In addition to Segar's at The Plough, an electrical store which had a small range of records, the main record shop was Follett's who produced their own record sleeves. There's an image of their record sleeve here. Brendan
It would be nice if the library had a lounge/coffee-bar area. Imagine access to 1000s of books, a comfortable armchair, good coffee (or tea or whatever), and a view of the garden. I could spend days loosing myself in useless information. Some wicker chairs outside would be nice for summer too and give me somewhere to smoke.
