cate
Anyone else experienced this recently? I seem to remember that there was a thread about someone doing it and then taking money in advance and disappearing. This guy said that he 'was doing a neighbour's house' and wondered if I wanted mine done. Conversation conducted through the door. Doesn't sound kosher to me. Don't have a description unfortunately. peckhamboy
Sounds like this guy might be a window cleaner. You have to watch them - they're as bad as the clowns. Pearson
Did he ask for money in advance..? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14092-man-at-front-door-asking-if-i-want-windows-cleaned/#findComment-378186 Share on other sites
cate
I didn't open the door or ask him to do the windows so no mention of money was made. He did say to contact him if I wanted him to do them and I said OK put your card through the door but he didn't which makes me think he was trying it on. We've had at least 4 burglaries in this road in the last 10 days. Pearson
There are some good people in this world believe it or not, he could just have been one of them..maybe?I think you need to get out more :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/14092-man-at-front-door-asking-if-i-want-windows-cleaned/#findComment-378204 Share on other sites
max wellhouse
In a similar vein, I was recently approached by a man wanting to know whether I would like regular deliveries of some sort of white liquid in a bottle, in exchange for cash. Apparently, he could also get me 'eggs' and 'juice' if I wanted them (obviously some code for drug-related paraphernelia I shouldn't wonder!). I slammed the door in his face and called the police, who were less than helpful. Be on your guard if you see this man. He drives a slow-moving electric vehicle with crates stacked on the back, and he seems to tour the area in the early mornings. djw
This is a con man. There are several threads about him. He told me the flat above were having there's done, so I agreed to have mine done as well. Paid him, because he was vey personable and I didnt feel any reason to doubt him. He said he would just get the ladders. Never saw him again. You were right to turn him away. Never pay in advance. It taught me a rather embarrassing lesson. cate
Thanks djw. I posted this as a warning because I remember reading about it before. I'm happy to have occupied the 'jokers' on here who think they are very funny. You're not, and you would never get a job as a stand-up. Pearson
But seriously Cate, you never even found out if he was a 'con-man'?You didn't even open the door...Sure, i & other know of the ones how do ask for cash up front and i agree they are not to be trusted. But you're just adding 2 + 1 and getting 37??? cate
He said he would put his card through the door and he didn't. He didn't say he didn't have any cards on him and so would come back and drop it through the door. I have dealt with quite a few window cleaners in the past and none of them get work by knocking on doors and touting for business. They come on recommendation. *Bob*
I remember when we first met our current window cleaner. He arrived in top hat and tails and bowed - before presenting his card. max wellhouse
Cate,Funnily enough, I did once have a job as a stand-up, though it didn't last long as I would get to the end of a joke and then I could never remember the, erm .... no, it 's gone. Now I'm forced to live a hand-to-mouth existence and eke out a living where I can.Let me know if you ever need your windows cleaning, or I'm a dab hand at tarmacing (spelling?) drives or replacing loose tiles (special rates for OAPs and the vulnerable). mum2theboys
Came to our house too and tried to be quite persuasive. Said that some flats were having theirs done. We said that we didn't have any cash in the house and he said he would take whatever we had. He asked if he could step in while he waited. Be very careful, he is very charming but forceful in his speech and does not want to take no for an answer!
