Certified copies of documents

Recommended Posts

I see they've now moved to ED Road but I recently needed to do this twice and used William Bailey Solicitors. Just walked in, no appointment needed. ?10. Another local firm were most unhelpful on the phone, saying they didn't have time etc so I was pleasantly surprised. Worth a call first in case anything has changed since the move though.

Hubby and I are trustees of a small trust fund set up for 4 of the grand children. The firm operating the fund have requested that we get certified copies of our passports or photo driving licences, a utility bill or bank statement.

There is a 3rd trustee who has to do the same. Not only content with verification of trustees, they also want grandsons aged 19 and 22 to produce same. Neither boys have passports or driving licences, one lives at home so no utility bills but has bank statements. Whilst we have used William Bailey ( our solicitors for many years) to verify various documents in the past - the Firm operating the trust have stated that verification is only accepted by an accountant or someone who has a professional finance qualification and is a member of a recognised professional body and can quote their membership number. The firm is not happy to accept solicitors certification. The boys live in Essex and are both low earners so cannot afford to go to an accountant. Whilst it is understood that verification is needed by the grandchildren when they qualify (aged 25) to receive payment from the fund, we cannot understand stance at this stage. Even our accountant who deals with the tax issues of the fund is bemused.

The company dealing with the fund has been managing the portfolio for many years and have been very efficient and we do not want to change.

Ilona M - that is good to know, I had no idea they certify documents and those were exactly the ones that I needed certified!

Pugwash - I had to jump through a lot of hoops when my daughter inherited a small sum of money from her godmother. The time and energy spent getting various documents certified wasn't really worth it for the money involved but it was her inheritance so I had to persevere!
