On Tuesday evening I saw something very unpleasant outside of a residence on Whateley Road. I saw a man shouting every expletive and yelling very racial things to a young couple. I think it was a man who lives next to this couple who was being very verbally abusive telling them to **** off and go back where they came from. (this is an extremely edited version of what he was saying) It was horrible to hear someone saying such things to another person.

As much as I would like to reveal the address where I saw this horrible behaviour, so everyone could knock on this person's door and tell him what an awful man he is and how Dulwich does not need people like him. Instead, I encourage anyone who saw or most likely heard this person shouting to speak to the police about it as I have.

Dear Edcitizen (what's that? Ed!)

It is obviously me that you are referring to. The forum is a great place to ease away the hours of boredom and in doing so peddle tittle tattle. However it does not give you the platform to publish untruths into the public domain. If you had wanted to know the unobserved facts you should have approached me personally.

I have suffered verbal abuse from the residents upstairs for nigh on three years. I am unable to listen to the radio in the morning before going to work without someone slamming their foot on my ceiling. The last time I played music in my front room was about six months ago. I daredn't light a barbecue for fear of complaint and subsequent verbal abuse.

The incident that you refer to was triggered by myself and my wife having an animated debate about assessment policy in Primary education (yes we are both teachers!!). This was met by the usual crushing of the floorboards and a knock at the door! On opening I was threatened, both verbally and physically..."Come on then I'll take you on"....and also to be told by the neighbour how much money I owed John Lewis and what my current bank balance was!! I am sure if your neighbour was opening your mail you would feel aggrieved!! Are you aware that it is illegal to open mail not addressed to your name.

Telling someone to 'F... Off back to Mersyside' is not rascist but regionalist. I bet you have never been guilty of that!!

Please be careful about what you say and how you choose to publish it. There are always two sides to every story...and and an awful lot in between. Think on!!

jeremyclutson: well done for putting your side of the story across. I read the OP's comments and built a picture in my head of a abusive racist screaming at his innocent neighbours for no reason but after reading your side of the story I can understand why you got so angry. Often with old conversions they didn't soundproof properly, now there are regulations whereby it is not permitted to have exposed floorboards or laminate flooring for a first floor flat.

Majority of East Dulwich flats are conversions and most were undertaken with zero noise insulation added between floors. I've lived in such a flat and terrible to discover zero privacy with/from neighbours.

It is possible to add sound proofing but it does take cooperation.

When I did this - I was the top flat - I lifted every third floorboard and placed sound insulation. Took about 60 hours, ?2,000 and a lot of disruption.

The alternative is huge resentment.

Anyone suffering from a noise disturbance and being ignored or fobbed off by Southwark Council (as have I!) do get in touch with these people.

Southwark Council misquoted The Housing Act to us for three years, we've now been told we can take them to court as well as the noise offenders.

This is a huge problem, as anyone suffering knows full well.

    • Because our posting, banking and counter services needs have changed and the Post Office and Royal Mail can't compete with the myriad of parcel delivery services (none of which make any money either) that are there to satisfy our every immediate delivery whim and then when we decide we don't want said goods we block up the Post Office trying to return them for free. Or the sense of dread when you realise a parcel has been sent by Royal Mail and you get the text that says: we will be delivering between 7am and 7pm today (or maybe tomorrow or the day after but we will only tell you that at 6.59pm) and if you want to change your delivery click here and we will put you into an endless loop of clicks that don't let you change anything. I sense this is why our local politicians offer such a weak response as they know the system is broken and there is nothing they can do about it and they don't want to put their necks on the line. P.S. I am using the Royal "we"!
    • There have also been a few instances of it on Whateley Road recently.... Horrible.
    • You seem to have had a run of bad luck, but I don't understand some of what you say. What do you mean by each shop requiring a different bar code etc? Surely you only have one thing to show for each package you are sending or  collecting? Don't you get an email or some other kind of notification which contains the thing you have to show? Are you suggesting that it would be easier to queue up at the Post Office than do it at a shop? You have to show barcodes etc there as well. Where did I ever imply that anybody was "thick" or a "troglodyte"? I did suggest that some people wanted to hang onto the old ways of doing things, like only using cash, that's true. And it isn't that this country "can't run a decent, simple post office." It's that Crown post offices are losing money by maintaining  buildings which are expensive to run,  whilst no longer providing  the range of services they used to, because for various reasons they are no longer needed. And the services which are still needed can be more cost effectively provided elsewhere without causing undue inconvenience to customers. Things move on.  But in any case, nothing has been decided yet. The closure of the Lordship Lane post office is just a proposal. I hate self service tills 🤣
