DulwichFox
Iceland doesn't just sell Frozen Food. It sells.. Bread...Biscuits... Crisps... Sweets.. Chocolate... Soft Drinks... Cakes... Lots of things.. and is cheaper than the other shop on the corner of North Cross rd. and it has a small car park at the rear. ...and provides some local jobs... ... and there are always people in there...... and it has survived a long time... unlike some other shops... Bic Basher
So if Iceland goes, should we get rid of Favourite Fried Chicken for being out of character? Or Londis and the other convenience stores as they don't sell trendy produce? May I suggest to the OP that she moves to Beckenham which may be more along the type of shops she can spend her cash at instead. Vilmos
The only time I have bought cheese that was mouldy, or cucumber that was rotting or yoghurt where the pot was cracked was when I shopped at Waitrose. You don't pay for extra quality at places like Waitrose and M&S, you pay for the name. Food at Iceland is just as good and wholesome as it is in the up market supers, so long live Iceland on Lordship Lane.I use it (Iceland on Lordship Lane that is) quite often actually. richfish
Chest freezers and Iceland - I think its an association from childhood, the 70's hey day of bulk buying massive tubs of ice cream, big bags of chips and burgers etc etc. That's the Iceland brand in my mind and its sort of stuck. But I remember that as what I think you would call 'aspirational' now; modern families eating exotic foods like frozen lasagne and prawn cocktail. My mother thought chest freezers were a danger (risk of falling in) so we had a tiny upright and hence never went to Iceland. Having three of them must be a significant risk, have you alerted your insurers? And its still an ugly building - and it will still be an ugly building if it housed some uber cool trendy farmer's market, Waitrose or Lidl - and yes I shop in all 3, the latter with equal frequency. Maybe there are some idiots out there who just shop there for the name, but generally it's because it stocks premium products as well as the normal branded groceries you get at most other supermarkets. I'd have to disagree with you when you say Iceland is just as good quality-wise!!!EDIT: ....and for your reading pleasure:Exhibit A: http://uk.reuters.com/article/2011/06/08/uk-waitrose-idUKTRE75743320110608Exhibit B: http://myretailmediablog.com/2011/09/15/iceland-foods-auction-at-risk-as-vulnerable-financial-markets-prevail/...who knows what could happen :D Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13822-iceland-eyesore/page/8/#findComment-476098 Share on other sites

RosieH
I like Iceland. I like Vimto and their coconut milk is half the price of that in Sainsbury's and their crumpets are dead cheap and if ever I fancy fish fingers they're good and toilet roll is often on special offer.I like Waitrose. I like rillettes (no other major multiple seems to stock it and when the deli did it was ?6 for a jar), and they make good pies and their figs are currently half price and their prepared food is usually (though not always) nicer tasting than Sainsbo's or Tesco.I also like big butts and I cannot lie.
