In the debate about whether or not Russia tried to undermine the Clinton campaign for the presidency everyone seems to have forgotten that Trump actively appealed to Russian hackers to do just this:

I don't understand why this appears to be getting left out of the current analysis. It's uncomfortable sure, but doesn't it sail very close to collusion?

John, remembering is undermining

What was said 'then' really doesn't matter

It's what's said 'now' that matters.

Remember the 350 squillion that we're not meant to remember, not a dicky bird from the leave voters demanding it

They want 'their' country back, but not the money to run its hospitals it seems

Hey ho!

it doesn't matter what the thread is- you remoaners have to turn it around to the brexit vote.....what you need to remember, and every now and then a church man or someone else with their finger on the pulse of the dispossessed and poor of the UK, is that it is the poor and poorly educated (thanks to destruction of the life-line of the poor- the grammar schools- destroyed by an evil public school Labour asshole who did it purely to keep the poor on their place and thereby make him feel better about himself.....)who suffer most when there is uncontrolled immigration....

And no matter what the thread is you, uncleglen, have to turn it around to your twin hobbyhorses of bring back grammar schools and end immigration.

If we're to be referred to as remoaners is it OK to call the other side brexshitters?

I have little sympathy for the US - after all, they've been 'influencing' other countries' elections for years and years.

Besides, it's a little rich for the FBI to come out as part of this, considering their handling of Hillary's email investigations and the timing of their announcements quite arguably had a significant negative effect on Clinton's chances.

Ha ha..you are kidding when you say 'Churchman' ? Is that the same Church who owns so much property that it's mind boggling and who's not exactly 'spread the wealth' they have.

I don't know how seriously deluded you are , but wake up (though I fear this is you 'awake'). You really think that once we've scuppered our relationship, and economy with Europe, once this country have pulled out of the influence of the European courts, that it's going to be better for your poor & dispossessed. Really, truly, actually?

You are kidding. The party that are leading this with such vigor (because you handed them your red, white & blue arses on a plate) have been the ruling classes since times of old. They have been so used to ruling the likes of you, that they certainly don't want Europe interfering any further with the way they like it. They want to have the power to f*ck you over harder and as often as they feel they can. They have and will always treat the likes of you with contempt, because it's what thay can do without recall.

And don't delude yourself any more with the 'stop immigration' card. There will be internal 'commonwealth' immigration to bring in nurses and the likes, so when you're laying in a home, unable to wash or go to the toilet. the nurse will be most likely part of the wave of skilled and unskilled carers we'll need to support an aging population. They most likely won't be from the rose tinted Utopia of good old Engerlaa la land you're cooking up in that overheated head of yours. And remember that care will be paid for from what little your pension or assets are worth.

And if its about the people here getting to the front of the job line, then tell me how the farmers on the Fenlands are going to raise their crops, cut celery and cabbages during the seasons.

Even if you took every jobless person in Cambridgeshire and put them to work (you remember that people actually work on these farms) there still wouldn't be enough people to fill the jobs needed, and as well as they're done now. So these farmers will just take their business to Romania and Poland where they already contract some their growing to.

Which all and all is great, just not for the rural economy of Britain

Enjoy.

Margaret Thatcher, as education secretary, approved the closure of more grammar schools in the 1970s than any other politician. Not that I think that's a bad thing, they're terrible for social mobility, but just thought I'd make the point.

"it doesn't matter what the thread is- you remoaners have to turn it around to the brexit vote.....what you need to remember, and every now and then a church man or someone else with their finger on the pulse of the dispossessed and poor of the UK, is that it is the poor and poorly educated (thanks to destruction of the life-line of the poor- the grammar schools- destroyed by an evil public school Labour asshole who did it purely to keep the poor on their place and thereby make him feel better about himself.....)who suffer most when there is uncontrolled immigration...."

was the Brexit vote uninfluenced by Russian propaganda? I thought it was very clear that it was, and that there is ongoing infiltration of the media by that atavistic nationalist dream factory. But their stuff is only slightly more stupid than the official orthodoxies. Basically, if you can spot an interest then Putin (like the USA) will be getting their fingers dirty. Britain leaving the EU not in Putin's interest ??

making blanket reference to 'the poor' is likely to over-simplify and stigmatise. this is not to disagree that the redistribution of wealth is key to a civilised state and that there is an absence of credible policy in this area: May's new 'sharing society' to replace Cameron's 'Big' one had me retching when I saw it on the news feed just now - Tories who go down that route are either deluded or lying: why, after all, are they Tories? Has she been reading Disraeli for God's sake? Or is this part of 'nudge' (a policy of which Putin would be proud). If she is genuinely going to adopt socialist policies to reintegrate our fractured sociality then she should cross the floor of the house and join Corbyn.

the adverse consequences of grammar school education for social mobility are well documented. is it the case that you have some evidence to the contrary?

the catastrophic consequences of preventing immigration (for the economy and PARTICULARLY for those most dependent on care or in need of housing) are such that no sane government will do anything at all except say they are stopping it when they are not. We have an ageing population used to a (very) high average standard of living: we will become ever more reliant on relatively cheap young labour that we are not producing ourselves. Excluding the highly educated (and culturally close) workers from the EU in such circumstances is just stupid.

There's a very important 'dog poo/cc tv' thread that UG is busy on

Remember there's no multitasking where the #brexshitters are concerned

'Taking control' and 'getting your county back' is about as much as their brain can hold

That and speed reading The Express to reacidify the bile.

and imagine how they'll feel when after all the wringing

of hands, by 2020 May will have changed nothing for them.

When Sky were in Boston and saying there jobs were being

undercut by cheap foreign labour - I thought what an advert

for a union closed shop.

Thanks for your exoneration ????

Teresa May made me do it

Here's a New Year's resolution, why not keep personal feuds away from a thread with a serious discussion. And let's not debate what I have just said.

The US is clearly becoming la la land (whatever that may be). A nation that has typically being a bully is now out-bullied by its cousin to the East.

Reminds me of Frankie's Two Tribes.

So I see there is now a suggestion that Trump may have had 'secret contacts' with Russia in the run up to the election. It's hard to know what to make of it frankly https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jan/10/fbi-chief-given-dossier-by-john-mccain-alleging-secret-trump-russia-contacts.

My instinct would be that it's all far too far fetched, but then Trump's behaviour is so erratic, who knows what's going on.

So reading this https://www.theguardian.com/media/2017/jan/10/buzzfeed-publishes-donald-trump-russia-documents-ethics-questions I have to conclude that this latest story (of secret contacts with the Kremlin) lacks credibility. It's pretty poor of buzzfeed to have published it without any real evidence of the reports veracity. I don't like Trump and his dismissal of evidence of Russian hacking, does open him up to these kind of stories.... but, even he must be afforded the same right not to be smeared in the press that anyone else has.

We can't know the detail of the truth of this of course, but it's all too credible.

Clearly Trump and his 'people' have spent time building relationships in Russia. Given the way the Kremlin works it would be odd if they hadn't taken the opportunity of this connection to gather as much intelligence on Trump as they could. And given who Trump is one can imagine that a lot of that intelligence would be potentially compromising.

The interesting thing will be to see how the US government machine now handles this. I wonder what kind of a person FBI Director James Comey is, and what sort of pressures he's being put under.

As Meryl Street said, disrespect invites disrespect. If Russia did have something on Trump, it would explain so much, not the least Trumps erratic behaviour.

What's the difference between a lentil and a chickpea?

Trump wouldn't pay $1000 to have a lentil on his face.

    • Nobody would know because no force is collecting any statistics to see if actioning NCHS is linked to reductions in actual hate acts. The only basis for this is a paper written 70 years ago which hypothesised such a link. Face validity, rather than statistics, seems the basis for this.
    • There is also a Post Office at Mount Pleasant. Which isn't the Royal Mail Sorting Office for London. If you Google it it seems quite a large building, I doubt it's doing the trade that justifies it now.
    • After the last 14 years of govt where things got demonstrably worse year on year on year - people did not rise up after 5 prime ministers in 6 years because of their ineptitude - the people did not rise up  The notion that a govt with a thumping majority is going to be overthrown is for the birds   People do understand what they inherited    the nfu might portray this as a battle on farmers - but so few will be  affected it’s impossible not to laugh   Plus, add in the hilarity of everyone who decried every street protest for 14 years now saying “bring it on!!” As for the poor - they have removed winter fuel from SOME pensioners who are more likely to afford it      they have also increase minimum wage for the poor   Which ain’t nothing    and well done for squeezing a jaded “money tree” reference in there
