My youngest had a wooden one. The eldest had a regular bike with pedals and chain taken off. They were both fine.

BC Bikes at Goose Green will take pedals & chain off then put back later - seems like a sensible way to do things. They stock kids bikes too & so you could actually buy one there. I highly recommend them, lovely guys & great customer service.
