Sorry I'm such a miserable old bag. The problem at the moment is that I've given up coffee for Lent so I have a permanent headache. Usually by the afternoon I can't take it any more and go to Neros. If only I could stick it out and get through the withdrawal period .... but I'm such a pussy. Anyway, I'm currently inhaling a latte so I'm feeling much better now - and I'm starting to look forward to tonight. Bring it on Duffy!
My daughter was one of the 12-20 year olds down at the front :)) The last time Korn were at Brixton a couple of years ago, I took her, and they were brilliant. Now she's a bit older and doesn't need an adult with her, I wasn't allowed to go. I spent the evening feeling miserable and wishing I was there. :(

Duffy rocks.

Amazing voice of course. If you close your eyes you really do hear traces of Dusty. She's extremely pretty and very composed. Oozes confidence. I predict she'll go far.

She didn't come on until about 9.15 but the Bush Hall had a great DJ - he even played Thelma Houston's Jumping Jack Flash - now there's a classic.

All you Korn fans out there might be interested to know that Jonathan Davis (lead singer) has some solo gigs planned. He will be playing at Union Chapel Islington on Monday 16th June. Not the easiest venue to get to from ED but it's so nice there that it's worth the effort. You can buy direct from the venue and collect the tickets on the night (thus cutting out those ugly booking fees that we all hate).

I saw Elbow last night at Brixton............anyone else?

I know you hate Brixton giggirl but I think it's a great venue.especially when the drive home takes 10 mins!

I agree that the bar is rubbish but I was off the sauce last night.

Downstairs standing is a great view because of the sloping floor.

Elbow sounded fab, played a chunk of the new album, some classics and some oldies that I'd never heard before.

Richard Hawley came on to duet with them on The Fix (from the new album)

Guy was doing alll his audience chit chat which went down well. The ended with Grace under pressure which is always a treat.

but still- their material is all such a similiar tempo it's hard for them to really get going. I would go and see them again, they make a great noise...but somehow it wasnt a great show. good but not great.

Maybe it's cos I wasnt drinking!

Sounds like a good gig. Don't think Brixton was necessarily the best venue for Elbow. Can't really argue with the 10 minutes journey home - there's a lot to be said for that.

This year's Somerset House gigs will go on sale soon (maybe this week or next?). They normally throw up some corkers. And the 176 bus stop is just outside the gates. Also, the long-awaited Meltdown programme should be out some time this month (again, on the 176 route). I'll post here as soon as I know more.

kind of a little diversion,if i put it up on another thread solly. but this is pretty great. log in needed but no payola unless you wish to.

tons of v famous artists often at their prime. At the moment I have some 1969 janis joplin gig on. its pretty great.

the're all in there

Mightyroar - I was at elbow too, and had a fantastic time. I consumed several pints of Guinness before, during and then a couple of cheeky ones after the gig in true Tuesday night fashion, so perhaps this had a bearing on my night. I think elbow are a great band to see live. I have to say I love the Academy, great sound, atmosphere and location. The bar situation could certainly be improved but I was served within 5-10 mins for both of my rounds. The sloping floor catches you out when you are drunk sometimes, but the crowd at elbow gigs are normally friendly so no problems there.

Have a great weekend all.

This year's MELTDOWN lineup is being announced tomorrow (Sunday) in The Observer. Tickets on-sale next Thursday (for members) or otherwise Friday.

Meltdown always has a couple of amazing gigs (as well as some pretty obscure ones) so do check it out. It is so easy to get home to ED from the South Bank.

Massive Attack are curating this year so expect the likes of Portishead/Tricky.

So, Meltdown, eeehhhh..... Grace Jones anyone?

Did anyone else go to see this diva in Brixton (sometme in the 80s) when it took her so long to get on stage that half the audience had gone for the last tube by the time she made it on and the remainder bo'ed her?

No Chandon no band-on - very annoying.

Zutons would be alright. I really liked The Feeling's first album, thought it was full of some nice happy tunes, but the one single I've heard on the radio from their second album was a load of shite. "Fill my little world" was a real XFM song when XFM was still okay, but then they flogged it on Capital, and The Feeling basically went down the same sort of road as McFly or Busted (but with a gay twist).

Shame, as they undoubtedly have talent, and there were a lot of good influences on their first album.

    • Does anyone know when the next SNT meeting is? I am fed up with my son being mugged on East Dulwich Grove!
    • The issue must be everywhere at the moment. I was visiting a friend last week in Bermondsey, think we were walking  down Linton Rd & we dodged 7 dog poos. It was disgusting.
    • Thanks for your message — I actually took the time to look into what CityHive does before posting my original comment, and I’d encourage anyone with questions to do the same. Yes, the Companies House filings are overdue — but from what I’ve gathered, this seems likely to be an accountant or admin issue, not some sign of ill intent. A lot of small, community-based organisations face challenges keeping up with formalities, especially when they’re focused on immediate needs like food distribution. Let’s not forget CityHive is a not-for-profit, volunteer-powered CIC — not a corporate machine. As for the directors, people stepping down or being replaced is often about capacity or commitment — which is completely normal in the voluntary and community sector. New directors are sometimes appointed when others can no longer give the time. It doesn’t automatically mean bad governance — it just means people’s circumstances change. CityHive’s actual work speaks volumes. They buy most of the food they distribute — fresh produce, essential groceries, and shelf-stable items — and then deliver it to food banks, soup kitchens, and community projects across London. The food doesn’t stay with CityHive — it goes out to local food hubs, and from there, directly to people who need it most. And while yes, there may be a few paid staff handling logistics or admin, there’s a huge volunteer effort behind the scenes that often goes unseen. Regular people giving their time to drive vans, sort donations, load pallets, pack food parcels — that’s what keeps things running. And when people don’t volunteer? Those same tasks still need to be done — which means they have to be paid for. Otherwise, the whole thing grinds to a halt. As the need grows, organisations like CityHive will inevitably need more support — both in people and funding. But the bigger issue here isn’t one small CIC trying to make ends meet. The real issue is the society we live in — and a government that isn’t playing its part in eradicating poverty. If it were, organisations like CityHive, The Felix Project, City Harvest, FareShare, and the Trussell Trust wouldn’t need to exist, let alone be thriving. They thrive because the need is growing. That’s not a reflection on them — it’s a reflection on a broken system that allows people to go hungry in one of the richest cities in the world. If you're in doubt about what they’re doing, go check their Instagram: @cityhivemedia. You’ll see the real organisations and people receiving food, sharing thanks, and showing how far the impact reaches. Even Southwark Foodbank has received food from CityHive — that alone should speak volumes. So again — how does any of this harm you personally? Why spend time trying to discredit a group trying to support those who are falling through the cracks? We need more people lifting others up — not adding weight to those already carrying the load.
    • Well, this is very disappointing. Malabar Feast  has changed its menu again. The delicious fish curry with sea bass no longer exists. There is now a fish dish with raw mango, which doesn't appeal. I had dal and spinach instead, which was bland (which I suppose I could/should have predicted). One of my visitors had a "vegetable Biriani" which contained hardly any vegetables. Along with it came two extremely tiny pieces of poppadom in a large paper bag.   This was embarrassing, as I had been singing Malabar's praises and recommending we ordered from there. The other mains and the parathas were OK, but I doubt we will be ordering from there again. My granddaughters wisely opted for Yard Sale pizzas, which were fine. Has anybody else had a similar recent poor (or indeed good!)  experience at Malabar Feast?
