Thought I'd start a thread about live music, for people to either tell us about gigs they're going to, have been to, or want to go to. Also, people could let us know if they hear of any upcoming shows that shouldn't be missed (I'm not really talking local events here by the way).

Having seen them at Reading, I am well chuffed that a work colleague has just offered me a spare ticket to see The Gossip on the 13th! I shall report back, am expecting a good gig, she's got a fab voice!

Also The Pogues are doing their regular xmas gigs at The Brixton Academy. Tickets yet to go on sale, but they do 3 nights, so you can usually get them. I've been twice in the last 3 years, and intend to go this year. Even if you're not a massive fan (I wouldn't call myself a huge fan, but like a fair few songs), it's a really fun night, and I really do find it gets me in the Christmas spirit >:D<

Anyway, I love going to gigs, so post on here if there's something I should be seeing!

Good call Keef, was thinking of doing something like this myself but you've beaten me to it. I first saw the Pogues supporting Elvis Costello at the old Hammersmith Palais in '82 or '83 and they completely tore the place apart. Elvis was so boring compared to them. Saw them again at one of those Xmas gigs at Brixton Academy that you're talking about in the early 90s and it was like one massive party, brilliant atmosphere and full of people in Celtic shirts. Great gig and everyone pissed as puddings. Marvellous!:))

There are some great gigs coming up in november at the Camden Roundhouse, which is also an attractive venue as you don't have to battle for hours against thousands of 19 year old 'emo' kids for an overpriced pint of weak lager, unlike many venues I could mention.

Sonic Youth the next couple of nights, Richard Hawley, stranglers, super furries coming up (beastie boys sold out), but ones I'll be going to are:

Ojos de Brujo and Beirut

anyone up for one, t'other or both?

I like the Forum and also Koko. Brixton is very convenient for us East Dulwichites!

Must agree - not that keen on the apollo, however I had no choice as I really wanted to see them. It gets worse though! I'm taking my Mum :(, however its only fair as I only got in to Squeeze as my folks always used to listen to their stuff.

Have one spare ticket at the moment.

I could well be up for it too. A mate of mine went last year and said they still cut the mustard and of course you have to get into the spirit of things. Nudge nudge, wink wink!

Saw arcade fire at bristol academy and sheffield lead mill on their first tour a couple of years back. Really glad they are playing the festivals and converting more and more.

i would echo mockney s comments on the round house as well. Great venue. Bush hall also good. Spit z was good but is closing slash moving.

i was hoping to see hammel on trial in camden but sold out.

Brixton is my favourite, also like the Forum and Astoria. Apollo has crap sound, and hate Shep Bush Empire cos it was the first place where I couldn't smoke!!!

Anna when is Squeeze? Might just be interested in that ticket....

Jah, I'll discuss Pogues with you over a beer soon. Xmas 2004, Shane not bad singing, but couldn't understand a word he said between songs, and he had to go off every 3 songs or so for a drink break. 2005 Different man, seemed to have pulled himself together a lot, and gave a great performance! I'm told he was good last year, but I was in Oz.

Squeeze is the 5th December - for a minute there I'd totally lost the plot. I'd not put the dates in my diary and then I couldn't find the order confirmation. Thought I'd imagined it all - really need to dye my hair blonde to match brain!

Best venue in Hammersmith was the Palais - went to one of the last gigs there. The Good the Bad and the Queen - a very bizarre night.

    • Hi everyone, we are trying to finslise our decision for enrolling our son for 3+ from September and currently considering Dulwich Prep or Herne Hill. We like both and appreciate there is no right or wrong answer but what we like about HH is great focus on early years and also being coed. However if we can avoid the 7+ stress then prefer to do that. Dulwich Prep is closer but the difference is not significant. we know children are very active and busy in DP and they have great facilities, but unlike HH, we don’t know much about their focus on personal development and emotional intelligence, etc! Also not sure about long-term impact of being in boys only school. Difficult decision for us and we appreciate feedback from parents if you can share please.    thank you
    • Yeah that was their old policy. Their new policy is to force you to have a water meter and if you refuse they put you on a punitively high tariff which effectively forces you to have one. I was doing well with my policy of polite resistance which was to say yes fine I'll have one fitted but then not actually book an appointment or cancel the appointments they made. But then I was persuaded that it would be much cheaper anyway.
    • Lots of lovely lilac shrubs in flower at the moment. Would anyone consider giving me a cutting? It would involve digging out a basal off shoot, roots and all. I'd love one for my new garden but I'm so broke that I have to fill it with plants the slow way!
    • You are welcome to have mine for free. I was just about to post! Three panels - 6ft by 5ft - weathered/natural on one side and painted brown on the other.
