Emerson Crane
Who decides what is fashionable and what isn't, and are those that follow fashion devoid of imaginative thought and unable to decide for themselves what looks good on them, regardless of whether its in vogue or otherwise. Brendan
I'm giving serious consideration to wearing bow ties to work. Yes, no, maybe. I'm not sure. Business suits are fuk boring. RosieH
Emerson, I give you the very fabulous Miranda Priestly (fictional editor of Runway fashion magazine) in The Devil Wears Prada, who puts it so much better than I ever could:"This... stuff'? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select... I don't know... that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff. DJKillaQueen
I love that scene Rosie...such a brilliant speech and Meryl delivers it so brilliantly....ha ha.Now does anyone know where I can buy a cerulean track suit from? giggirl
I loved that film too, and Meryl Streep in it. Anyone seen the September Issue? I was thinking about that film the other day because I swear that if Anna Wintour* was a man she would be the equally scary Tom Ford. * For the uninitiated, the Meryl Streep character is based on Anna Wintour. Apparently Ms Wintour allowed the September Issue to be made as she thought it would be good PR to make up a bit of ground for the Devil Wears Prada. Backfired - oh yes. Moos
Argh, that scene! There's such an obvious riposte, and I was urgently rooting for Anne Hathaway to make it, but of course the plot required her not to. Bah. But it was beautifully delivered, Meryl Streep was amazing in the whole (slightly shabby) movie. RosieH
Yes, the film was a bit rubbish, but I liked that scene. What was the riposte Moos? And gigi, no, not seen the September Issue yet - meant to, but don't seem to have got round to it. Jah Lush
Fashion is transient. In one day out the next. I feel I know what suits me and it maybe a little ragged but I'm comfortable with it and that's all that matters. Tracksuits as day wear though is beyond shite. Moos
OK, so I left it for a few hours in order to seem more interesting. Anyone? Anyone? The riposte is:And here I am wearing the sweater that you think Oscar de la Renta made me wear. But mysteriously, blue sweaters are sold in their tens of thousands every day of every year entirely regardless of what the current dictates of the self-regarding twirling of the fashion world. Because the reality of the clothing industry is that the vast majority of people couldn't care less what Oscar de la Renta thinks, can't spell Yves Saint Laurent and simply go on wearing the same sort of clothes season after season, buying what they like or can afford. Take them away, and replace them with some other designer names, and the world continues to spin on its axis. The geniuses of the fashion world believe that they somehow own the wardrobes of ordinary people, but actually they are quite irrelevant. Wouldn't make much difference to the sales of Peacocks. Others may detest your look in the same way that you detest the sporty look, consisting of track suits and hoodies, Mr Beckham carries that look off very well. As long as YOU feel comfortable about what YOU wear, why concern yourself with what others wear, after all it's their choice. dita-on-tees
I was working in Milan this year and I expected to feel embarrassingly unstylish but to my relief the Milanese appear to have a fond regard for double denim, or leather with tassles. Nasty on a grand scale.Personally I have always thought obvious designer wear suggests a lack of individuality in personal style, but I dont think about it that much as fundamentally I dont care about clothes, it really is whats underneath that counts ;-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13242-uncool-fashion/page/4/#findComment-369450 Share on other sites
