MrsLL2b
HelloI am considering buying a glider chair for breastfeeding and I just wondered if anyone has used one of these and if so what they thought? I am worries it might be one of those things you get sucked into buying for a first baby and only use a few times. Also does there seem to be much difference between brands? Thanks Louise Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13225-glider-chairs-useful/ Share on other sites
Fuschia
For baby bo 1 I didn't and ended up with awful backache needing phsyio, feeding on the sofaBought a second hand one for the twins and it was fantastic, coudln't bear to part with itBrilliant for rocking a child to sleep, and great for your back Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13225-glider-chairs-useful/#findComment-360135 Share on other sites
The Nappy Lady
I agree - didn't have one myself due to lack of space, but a friend had one and I loved it, would definitely have had one if I'd had room for it.I tried out a few at one of The Baby Shows and did find some much more comfortable & supportive than others - and actually one of the cheaper ones (?150 or so?) was the best for me, so if you have the time/luxury of shopping around I would.I think you use them long past breastfeeding, and for rocking and cuddling poorly children, reading books at bed time etc.Molly Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13225-glider-chairs-useful/#findComment-360136 Share on other sites
gwod
Really great for feeding but SO ugly! For this reason you only want them in the house for a limited time ( If all goes well, its not long before your comfortable feeding anywhere) so I would really recommend getting a second hand one - they often turn up on the sale section here. nylonmeals
love our one! Really though that it might turn out to be a waste of money but it turns out to have been one of the best things that we got - so relaxing for baby and for me. A friend is going to re-cover hers as the colours are dreadful. Someone should design and market one with great contemporary colours! But apart from that, its a total recommendation from me Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13225-glider-chairs-useful/#findComment-360161 Share on other sites
Fuschia
The only thing is they're not comfortable to sit in while you're pregnant! Mind you I couldn't get comfy in any chair when I was pg with twins. But once they were born it was great, sometimes I dozed off with one or other asleep on my lap. And I have kept it in our living room for 2 years for the times one of the twins is ill, so I can sit and rock and watch night time TV... MrsLL2b
Thanks for the feedback everyone, I agree they are quite ugly and that is probably why i am reluctant to get one even though they do seem very comfortable.I shall keep an eye on the for sale section!thanks Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13225-glider-chairs-useful/#findComment-360248 Share on other sites
buggie
I'm finding myself living in my glider chair already (39wks pregnant) keep feeling nauseous and some how the glide of the chair eases this!! Pickle
I got one 2nd time round and wish I had one for my first child - super comfy to feed in, and we still use it now for bed time stories and cuddles. Well worth the money, I picked mine up 2nd hand on the forum for ?50 which was a bargain! Lou
I didn't get one for first child and my back suffered, so am thinking of getting 1 for number 2. Any brands anyone would recommend? Been looking on ebay and there are quite a few, but not sure if some are better than others.... Kes
I hadn't planned to get one but tried one out while very pregnant and it was heaven! Only comfy thing to sit in, was great for feeding too. Now it lives in DDs room (she's 1) and is a nice place for reading bedtime stories. snowboarder
I got a fairly cheap Hauck one with stool for about ?150 from Kiddicare - it was fine and used it for ages - but I do hate it and it is still in our living room awaiting next baby!! Couldn't fit in little snowboarders room so got a really cheap ikea arm chair (this one) which I have sat in for many hours (sadly) and it is also fine - nice and low and supports your lower back. EDmummy
Loved mine (with the matching footstool). It went to a lovely home (see Fuschia's comments). Ours was one the high quality ones from John Lewis and was worth every penny. akc74
I didn't get one because I hate the look of them - bought a second hand armchair instead. I have a big baby, now nearly 12 weeks and my back is not great, so I can't help thinking I made a bit of a mistake there! alieh
I don't have room for one upstairs in the bedrooms, but am really tempted to make space in the living room. But they are just so flipping ugly! I have seen some gorgeous ones (here if anyone wants to dream: http://www.olliella.com/, but they cost ?900 (yikes!!!). Does anyone who has been through this think that I will even get a chance to sit in a glider chair in the living room with a toddler tearing around? Last time I found my sofa really uncomfortable for feeding (and when heavily pregnant, actually) and wondering if I should get over my shallow hatred of the look of glider chairs to have somewhere nice to sit.The other option I am looking into is turning a normal armchair into a glider using these kind of parts: http://www.swivel-chair-parts.com/GliderandSwivelGlider.html but would need someone very handy to help with this I think. snowboarder
OH Alie they look MUCH better!! Whilst I do hate the fact that my chair has taken up residence in my living room - I now look round my living room and there are all kids of bright plastic things and teddies etc that I would prefer were not there either. I do find the cheapy ikea armchair I posted a link to just as comfortable though - wish they did that one in better colours. For me the rocking bit was not used at all - but yep sofa really uncomfortable. The Nappy Lady
I actually don't find them that offensive provided they are upholstered in cream fabric. Oh dear, I clearly have no sense of design. :-( Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13225-glider-chairs-useful/#findComment-361418 Share on other sites

EDZ
I used an arm chair. I recommend this one, http://www.maisonsdumonde.com/UK/en/produits/fiche/armchair-cottage-50140296.htm It has a pretty small footprint and the farbic is washable. I tried a glider chair and didn't think the ricking motion was all that great. Any comfy arm chair will do, but it needs to have a full back (so you can rest your head back and have support for your shoulders) and arms at the side to give you support. Moos
I used the same cheapy IKEA one snowboarder has, and it was good. But I still dreamt about a glider chair.. canadianlisa
I used the Ikea Poang chair- I can't figure out how to link it- but it is the chair that Ikea is probably most famous for. I have found it really comfy, it kind of rocks and the arms and back are a good height. We have spent many a long night in that chair. The glider chairs were just way too big for our place and reminded me of an old people's home. I know lots of women who swear by them and I am sure that they are really comfy. jollybaby
Good to know - I've just invested in a 'poang' for this purpose. Hopefully will be able to feedback fairly soon.
