From the people I've known since teenage years I think the proportion of those who've managed to give up smoking cigarettes (for EVER) is less than the proportion who've managed to give up heroin.

On the surface that's a scary (to me, anyway) result.

I've never smoked (or jacked-up..) but it sure seems a tough call to give up smoking !

I gave up twenty years ago.

My heaviest use was twenty a day during the week (in the days when you could smoke in the office) and forty a day at weekends.

I can't really offer advice as I stopped whilst I was travelling in Indonesia, I was ill one day and after that I just didn't want to smoke for some reason.

Since then, I've occasionally cadged a ciggie from someone else, and three times I've actually bought a pack of ten and chainsmoked them, but apart from that I'm not tempted even when drinking.

I do think it helps that my current partner and most of my friends don't smoke, though, plus the no-smoking law in pubs etc. means I'm less likely to smell cigarette smoke.

I'd say 95% of my friends and acquaintances who have smoked in the past have now given up. Am talking about people in their 30s and 40s here. I can't say if I/they have given up for EVER because, thankfully, we are not dead yet.

It really is not that difficult to give up smoking, come on. It is difficult not to succumb to temptation and have a fag with a drink when you're a little bit pissed, tis all.

    • Would Leon install a new double oven? Our eye level double oven was installed when we had our kitchen installed around 20 years ago and will need to be replaced with similar. I think we had 2 people to install it then - so does Leon work alone?
    • My car was registered in 2004. Automatic, ULEZ compatible.  Used to use it daily for work until 2016 when retired. Still used 3-5 days weekly after that as was doing voluntary work. My mobility has gradually declined and  it is painful to walk.. Family live in Kent, Essex and Sussex - so need car to visit them. My car battery is 2 years old - when had to call out RAC to assist at home as it was dead, they found it was the original battery installed in 2004!! My car is essential - shopping each week, being able to go to garden centres, or DIY stores, taking the cat to the vet and  other social activities. I now only half fill with petrol every 3- 4 weeks, so save that way. I am careful  with my finances and would be lost without the car. It is regularly maintained (Turners).
    • I remember Tesco- it was on the corner of North Cross Road where Superdrug is now. Very small if I remember correctly.  We shop in Pound land - having discovered that shampoo and conditioner (brand names) were only £1 each. Good selection of most things that we need on a regular basis. It is better than the one in Peckham. Never noticed loud music when I have been in there and have always found the staff helpful and cheerful.
