damzel
No idea! My 2.5yr old has been taking coins from my bedside table and putting them in her money box since she could walk. Daddy taught her to just take the pounds and 2 pound coins and leave the rest behind. She's rich! Claire29
my 5 year old get's ?2 a week on a saturday and he never forgets! I am pleased we started with the pocket money thing because he has saved up for various toys, which I wouldn't normally let him get because I think they are a waste of money or that we have got something similar already, but if he saves his money it's his choice what to spend it on. Mrs TP
We do 25p per week per year of life, so 9yr old ?2.25 per week and 6yr old ?1.50 per week. We still buy odd comics on top.PS Forgot to add we take money off for bad behaviour, e.g. 10p / 20p and they can earn it back or get extra for odd chores such as sweeping up all the rice on the floor after their toddler sister (who doesn't get any pocket money) has thrown her dinner everywhere or picking up apples / leaves in the garden etc.My 9yr old has become v. careful with her money and considers purchases and chooses between things. The 6yr old still doesn't quite get it and sulks when she can't get everything she wants but we don't give in. EmilyE
I've been wondering something similar. No conclusions, but my feeling is that starting low must be the key. It's easy to up it, after all, but not to negotiate down... womanofdulwich
i think start low and if they want more they can take on chores of some kind. obviously they should do some chores anyway- but cutting grass /hedges/weeding/cleaning car are all good ones and they can start off withyou teaching them these life skills and as they take them on themselves you give thema bit extra. GinaG3
We used to get ?2 and the occasional magazine, until it turned into an allowance of ?80 a month, but we were around 14 by then, this stopped once work started at 16..My daughter will have the same treatment, I always thought ?2 was a fair amount. sillywoman
?80 a month??!!!!! Holy Cow - I'm definitely not letting my 14year old see this thread: we're more at the WOD end of the spectrum.Re 6yr old; mine gets 10p per week for each year of his life, so currently 60p. We did this for all ours up to secondary school when a more appropriate allowance was negotiated. Can see that maybe 25p per week, per year might be more useful for teaching about money management though. GinaG3
Haha, ?80 a month = child benefit payments for new clothes, days out etc. So not actually that much, but we got that instead of pocket money but it came with responsibilities I assure you. ?2 I say!! Izodia
I used to get ?80 a months at 14 too. But from that I covered my bus fare to/from school and my school lunches. So that way I learnt to manage my own budget at an early age.
