Zooming through series 5. Enjoying it A LOT, but for the first time, I'm finding part of it to hollywood and unbelievable (the McNulty thing). Still great though, except another of my all time favourites has been killed off! Doubt he'll be the last. Episodes 8 and 9 tonight I think. Oh, and I want a cool name too :-(
Well That's The Wire finished for me. Last series good as ever, but far from my favourite (3 and 4 get that prize). To be honest I thought it could have done with at least another hour to tie it all up, it just felt a bit rushed at the end. That said, it's still the absolute nuts, and a couple of really good bonus featurettes too.

urgh. That's it. One more feature length 90 minute final episode to go and it's all over. Now what do we do for an evening's DVD box set viewing. It was bad enough watching countless episodes of Friends as we waited for Season 5 DVD to be released but now what. And before you ask, yes we done the Sopranos. Whatchu gonna do ?

I have to say it's quite the oddest thing, watching a character with your name (Michael Lee). It's even odder bearing in mind most of the characters don't have full names ie Bug, Dukie, Cheese, Namond etc. And of course not forgetting the fact that I have little to no resemblance to Bodymore's Michael Lee in either physique or career choice.

And my final thought for the night - from Episode 1, Season 1, we've had the subtitles on. Otherwise you gotta spend all your goddam bitch-ass motherfuckin time rewinding and rewinding. How about you ?

The character Cheese is actually called Cheese Wagstaff, father of.... No spoilers for those still on S1...apparantly this was going to be explored further down the line but it was never gotten around to.

I watched S1-3 with my lady, who is French, and who therefore needed the subs or it was game over. It did help me massively to understand what was being said.

I then watched S4 + 5 alone for whatever reason, sans subs, and found that I had to work a little harder to get everything, but I enjoyed it more as I was focusing more on what was going on and not on the script at the bottom of the screen.

E2A: Ive still not seen the last 2 episodes of S5

season 2 is sooo different to the others but is possibly my favourite. The story it tells is one even less explored than the normal urban decay. Without giving stuff away my only gripe is that very few of the characters re-appear in later series.

But a dockers breakfast! Has to be seen to be believed!!

  • 1 month later...

The Wire Season 2 has been right at the top of my "must have NOW" list with lovefilm.com forever and I finally received disc 1 on Saturday morning. I was giddy with excitement. Unfortunately I had to hurry off to the West End to the Saturday afternoon matinee of Hairspray with my Brighton friends (how very gay my Saturday was). Anyway, Good Morning Baltimore y'all

Many hours later I was tucked up in bed (slightly pissed) watching disc 1 on my laptop. A whole different take on Baltimore, I think you'll agree. Gosh I'd almost forgotten how hot McNulty is. So long since I saw Season 1 that I'm sort of finding my feet a little. It's all good.

    • Interesting, because I am finding it next to impossible to get an appointment at Tessa Jowell.
    • Yes, I live Colyton/Dovedale area and lots of swifts usually.  I'd love a swift nesting box too.
    • There's always a large flock(?) over the area of back gardens surrounded by Colyton / Dovedale / Marmora / Scutari, but no idea if / where there are any nesting boxes. We'd love to have one, and often have swifts zooming close by, checking out possible sites.
    • I would have thought the cost of erecting X meters of metal barriers would be the same irrespective of location, plus given the issues with access now due to the "bunds", it would also be easier given the ample direct access the common provides? The reason I've heard from the organisers is that their footprint has been tailor made for that part of the park, so it's not possible to fit it anywhere else. Which is a ridiculous argument given that  they've already altered / extended it due to the space they've 'lost' from the "bunds". The reason I've heard from FOPR and others is that as the common is public land (or similar) it requires permission from the Home Secretary (or similar) due to ancient grazing rights or something. Oddly it doesn't seem to have affected the circus, the steam fair, the dog show etc etc etc Yes, the wide path where Parkrun starts & finishes will become a controlled crossing during the build, and completely closed off during the festival. Also, when I asked about the reason for the extended footprint onto the sports pitch, they said it was to replace lost space where the bunds are, which they used to store equipment. However, they were unable to explain where this storage area now was on the new plan... And when asked about the loss of the sports pitch due to the extension & access road, they said the council had assured them there were no matches booked for that period. But what about the kids, families, who play on them? No answer...
