DovertheRoad
When it comes to eating/drinking Camberwell and Peckham have been more interesting than East Dulwich for a good while now. Was surprised to see Angel's & Gypsies has gone under but we tried new eatery Queens on Church St the other night and food was amazing. I also love Theos which has been around for less than a year but does a great cocktail/diff pizza thing that came long before the daftly named Beautiful Pizza Boy on Bellenden. LL just feels a bit twee / bloated these days?Any more Camberwell tips appreciated. KidKruger
Silk Road obviously.I've heard Wuli Wuli highly recommended by several people on here too. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/125706-camberwell-stuff/#findComment-1055084 Share on other sites
Jeremy
Loads... Camberwell Arms, Silk Road, FM Mangal, Crooked Well. Camberwell punches above it's weight when it comes to eating. Angels & Gypsies was a loss, always used to enjoy it.But it's not unusual for more established/expensive areas to be a bit more bland/safe with their offerings, with more interesting stuff to be found in up-and-coming parts. KidKruger
Will keep that in mind Jesser, have been meaning to go there for a while - mainly based on your comments. We made this mistake and were unimpressed. Perhaps another chance is required for Sichuan. Having not been to Crooked W since its early opening days it was great to see it still so busy last week and they knocked up some fine drinks. Good guys behind the bar there.I wish Silk Road delivered.I don't mind LL getting blander. It's better for family friendly needs than surrounding areas and Peckham / Cambers are still only bus hop or ?5 Uber away. edcam
We've been in Camberwell for a while now and the only place we make the trip to ED for these days is ToastED and occasionally Yama Momo (which is great but overpriced). We're very lucky in SE5.Agree re Wuli Wuli - their food is no better or worse than any other bog standard British Chinese restaurant. Their Sichuan stuff is better but none of it comes anywhere near Silk Road (which is unlike any Chinese food I've had anywhere else, it's pretty much another type of cuisine altogether.) *Bob*
I had a distinctly average meal at the Crooked Well fairly recently, seeing as now seems like a good time to mention it. Shame as I'd taken some friends from overseas there, it was all very very ordinary, verging on 'not good'. When I went for a piss I could hear the Chef bollocking his crew about the culinary offerings they'd turned-out that evening, like it was all their fault. Perhaps it was a an off night, but it take a lot to return when there are so many other places to eat. LL is pretty decent these days with a reasonable spread of eateries for families who like food. There are solid performers and some very welcome new additions. I'd say it's improved a lot in terms of 'draw' over the last few years. Camberwell and Peckham have always had the food edge - but sometimes the Emperor has his new clothes on .. and the Insistence On Hip can start to get on your tits in some places. Peckham, Camberwell, ED.. we're lucky to have lots of choice, with new stuff opening up seemingly all the time. Huzzah! Jeremy
I reckon that's a bit harsh on Wuli, edcam... the Sichuan stuff is pretty decent IMO.Yama Momo on the other hand.. seems a bit "mutton dressed as lamb" to me. Bog standard food on pimped-up plates. Will keep that in mind about Crooked Well, Bob. Not actually been there in a couple of years. edcam
We'll have to agree to differ there Jeremy, Wuli Wuli's Sichuan food is ok but no more. Yama Momo isn't bog standard. You can find better Japanese food in London of course but as an alternative in the area and without any competition, it's pretty good.Re Bob's experience - sounds like a rare bad day, we eat there very regularly and it's always better than pretty much everywhere else.Queen's is a brilliant addition to Camberwell Church Street. I wouldn't rule out going back... maybe if I was craving for sushi and didn't want to travel. The tempura was OKish. Wouldn't order a meat dish again though. ????
I'm with Jeremy - thank god, up until now I thought it was only me who thought it was disappointing. Very underwhelming for me personally, but we are in a small minority! BrandNewGuy
Another thumbs up for the Camberwell Arms ? relaxed and friendly, but excellent food. And drinks at pub prices. DovertheRoad
Yamma Momo...two visits and a deliveroo. One visit was very average -their dynamite beef was unremarkable - the other better and good tempura. But a weird blue smoking cocktail with a "don't drink the dry ice" warning was a bit Stringfellows. Chintz.Takeaway was great and the lamb chops travelled surprisingly well but it was eighty f$#@$% quid all in.It's ok but that's all and baffled as to why it's rammed most nights like it's Mayfair Hakkasan or something. Well, the only one, which helps. For the record I thinkit's quite decent. binkylilyput
But I want to talk about Camberwell.......so here goesCrooked Well- can be really good. Happy hour cocktails are good if you are out to get wasted. I've eaten some good food there and I think they tend to churn out some pretty decent stuff. Which they ought to, for the price. They began by being a bit up themselves but have come down to SE5 level now I think. They have lots of offers on these days, such as BYO booze on a Monday and half price steak or fish on different days. Had a delicious bouillabaisse for sharing a while back which was half price- would have been incredibly expensive otherwise.Camberwell Arms- an absolute joyBear Freehouse was by far my favourite but has changed hands and is now run of the millFM Mangal- really great Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/125706-camberwell-stuff/#findComment-1056051 Share on other sites

Thank youThe Lounge isn't just for ED issues. And many are pleased to know about things that are available nearby. We live too far from Forest Hill, for example, to go there on any sort of regular basis but many forum members do live further down that way and clearly use their amenities on a regular basis.Play forum vigilante in other sections if you like but it's not appropriate here.
