@maryf:

Yes and they are applicable in more than one aspect.

The system I teach, Urban Krav Maga (urbankravmaga.org), draws on many years of experience in various fighting systems and martials arts such as classic Krav Maga, Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Traditional Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Boxing, Muay Thai, Vale Tudo and MMA. This experience along with real life experiences have been combined in a way that only functional techniques -i.e. techniques that have proven to be applicable in real life situations, taking into account the effects of stress and adrenaline- are part of the syllabus. In other terms, only functional and applicable techniques are selected and taught.

The organisation is open-minded and the system is constantly refined as instructors get feedbacks from unfortunate students who got into situations, from police and security professionals (we work closely with both), from CCTV and phone footages, from research studies, etc. We're not dogmatic about the techniques, we just focus on what's effective. Obviously what would work for a 6ft4 17 stones guy might not work for a 5ft6 9 stones person, so we're always questioning the techniques we teach and we're constantly trying to find better, more effective, ways.

Additionally, techniques are considered as tools that can be used in a variety of ways for a variety of situations. As I've already mentioned, Urban Krav Maga instructors are not stuck to any martial art dogma, so training focuses on acquiring and developing (fighting) skills and being able to improvise in order to adapt to any situation. These skills can be transfered to other sports and activities.

Lastly, being able to handle physical violence and learning to deal with aggressive behaviour leads to an increased self-confidence and self-esteem which, of course, will impact many aspects of your life.

I hope this answers your question. Why about you come some Wednesday and give it a (free) try?

    • Seems to be a lot of victim blaming going on here. Clearly a four year old child should not be riding a bike on a pavement out of sight of the adult who is supposed to be caring for him. Also clearly if the child ran into somebody from behind, he is not ready to be riding a bike in a place where people may be walking. Quite apart from the adult who in this case could have been badly hurt, so could the child. I wonder how those people on here asking how it was handled would have reacted if it had been them? All sweetness and light and apologies for having had the temerity to get in the way of the child? I'm pretty sure I would have been extremely shocked and annoyed.
    • Yes, do report it even if you cannot get info about the owner.  It’s likely that the dog has bitten other people (and dogs) already or will go on to do it again. I’ve been bitten by dogs in the past, owned by people I knew and they had bitten previously. One bit my face when I was putting her lead on. She had recently - about a week before - bitten the hand of a vicar who had been to discuss the wedding of the owners’ son.  The son was a doctor and he advised me to go to the hospital to start a new series of tetanus jabs.  I took his advice.  Unusual behaviour by a dog can also indicate health problems.
    • Another one for Aria! Super helpful. Went out of his way to advise (and fix) other issues that we never discussed and I didn't pay for. Running around ED picking up parts for my odd jobs. Didn't put any mark up on materials.  Clean and tidy. Very reasonable pricing.  Complimented my terrible tiling.  Will be my go to plumber from now on.
