Best cycling route - from Peckham to Bloomsbury with child in tow

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I was hoping anyone who cycles from Peckham or ED could recommend a good (quiet) route from SE15 to Bloomsbury (Bedford Way) that avoids horrendous roads. I'm going to be commuting with my 18 month old in tow. My husband thinks Blackfriars Bridge will be less stressful than Waterloo Bridge. Anyone have any experience or routes they could share? I would be very grateful!

Thanks

That is fine. You are going just north of the British Museum and there is a backstreets way from Blackfriars Road to the BM. And Blackfriars Road, of course, is segregated down to the E&C. And it's easy, safe, pretty etc to get to the E&C from East Dulwich.

Have you got the TfL cycling maps? Otherwise get a map and start from the north side of Blackfriars Bridge, take my word for it that getting to this point is easy and fun. the Bike Train map is here:

Last time I did the bit from Blackfriars to the BM, we went up Fleet Street and turned right up chancery lane, left to Lincolns Inn and up to the north-west corner. Straight across Kingsway, first left (Newton St) a bit of pavement around and across High Holborn (legal) then Bury Place to the BM and Montague St. I take it you are alright from there.

If you want to do it with someone you could come on the Bike Train one Weds and we could take you on to the BM. PM me for further info/alternative arrangements

Definitely Blackfriars Bridge, Surrey Canal Path from Peckham Library, through Burgess Park, up Portland Street to Elephant, onto the segregated routes all the way over Blackfriars to Farringdon then west through the backstreets to Bedford Street. Ride that way most days, give us a shout if you need a guide!

Wow thanks for that. That's really helpful! I had no idea there was a bike train - that definitely sounds bike a good place to start once I'm up and running with the bike and seat. I'll pm you Sally if that's ok nearer the time. Rendelharris thank you very much for the offer of a guide; I might take you up on it as well. Thanks guys :)

    • If you are referring to me, I was using my mobile. Just quoting the post I was replying to would have made no sense without showing my original post as well. I wouldn't have been able to do that on a "real PC" either, assuming I carried one around with me everywhere. It's nothing to do with what I'm using, it's the way the forum is set up to quote posts. I did insert a screenshot showing the keyboard by mistake.
    • You have to book for the Sunday roasts in advance. I have bad memories of once going for a circular  walk around Downe and then trying to eat. The Queens Head staff (and customers)  looked at us as if we were mad for attempting to get a meal without booking. The other pub in the village  reeked of bleach.  We had to  drive around in search of a meal, and ended up at some large pub whose name and location  I have thankfully forgotten. All I remember is the food, which was truly awful.
    • Speak to the Estate Agents, expect most will say get it on the market rather than spend money which may well be wasted when the next owner changes things. Get a couple of friends round and ask them honestly what rough or unfinished things come to their attention.  Weeds in the front. Door that doesn't close properly.  Arrangements in the kitchen.  Whatever!  There may be minor things that can put people off.  Clean your windows!
