We are about to start my son at dvis and have a question regarding school shoes... Having grown up aboard and not had a uniform what type of shoes would you recommend? They said no trainers but would like to buy something that he can run about in and also are durable/warm... Any advice would be appreciated.

Emmanuelle Marshall Children's Shoes in Syndenham is excellent. They carry some brands which aren't commonly found on the high street, and they have an excellent fitting service. They're good for hard-to-fit feet too. xx

Hi Ris2011,

most schools ask for black shoes and no trainers or sandals. For a child of your son's age I would suggest you chose shoes that have velcro fastening rather than laces or buckles. For running around the playground playing football etc I would suggest you go for black shoes that have a bit of a trainer style to them ie flexible soles, rounded toes etc rather than a formal black shoe style. If you have a limited budget, there is a Clarks Factory shop on Rye lane, near the Rye Chapel. The shoes there are about 1/3 less than elsewhere but they have limited styles.

    • Hello everyone, It's been a long time since I posted on here and I just wanted to update the situation. I remain active and available for haircuts. I am a home-visit hairdresser based in SW London. It's been a long time since I posted on here and I just wanted to update the situation. I remain active and available for haircuts. Some of you know me already. I posted a while back so I just want to re-introduce myself. I have been working as a hairdresser for the past 20 years (I'm 50, I trained at Vidal Sassoon and had a salon of my own, Top To Toe in Morden Jan 2000-Dec 2004) but now I just do freelance cutting hair for clients in their homes. I am available to answer queries if anyone has any? My speciality is cutting - men, women and children. I do have colour expertise so can advise but I do not colour hair at home. Thank you. There may be members of the forum who remember me coming to their home to do their hair in the 1990s! I have used the forum for a long time, as well also the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) newsletters back in the day. I have many clients with babies - it's one of the many reasons that people choose a home hairdresser. I always allow an hour and a half just in case there are interruptions in the haircut so that we are under no pressure. Finally I always make a policy to mention to new clients that I am transgender woman. I transitioned in 2009 and have reached the point when I "look" perfectly acceptable (I think, There is a profile photo which is up-to-date) however I make a point of being open about my history. If you are OK with that then I would be happy to cut your hair at your earliest convenience. My practice is that you do not wash your hair before I see you and I bring all equipment and styling products with me. All you need is shampoo and conditioner. p.s. If you do look at my website, I happen to be an artist and my website reflects that rather than hairdressing. Victoria Cantons
