Famous bands I have slept through or don't remember seeing

Recommended Posts

I saw this great bash at Brixton in the early 90s curated by Jesus and Mary Chain, with Dinosaur Junior and the brilliant My Bloody Valantine. I had no recollection of the fourth band until I sadly read the Cheeseman and friend of Cotswolds royalty self indulgent autobiogaphy. What? I saw Blur? Did I really? Well that didn't make any impression.

Go forward a year and at the newly reopened Shepherds Bush Empire I saw St Etienne. Heard late that Oasis got a big break by touring with them. I didn't remember that, but on research found that it was Pulp with them that night. And similarly no recollection (although loved them a short time later).

There can be separate threads on gigs that I forgot to go to, or famous support bands that I got in too late to see (Altered Images - not that famous- with Siouxie and the Banshees). I've slept through some bands as well due to too much booze, notably the Fall.

Never been keen on bigger gigs myself as on the short side so don't get to see much apart from other people's shoulders. I was taken to a Prince of Wales Trust event in the mid-90s by someone with tickets for the VIP area and what I remember most is the free Magnums (no doubt alcohol too but as the female celebs were clearly not eating, in public anyway) and I was wearing a loose summer frock I had the field to myself. Vague memory of Alanis Morissette (which companion called music to have periods to) but not much else.
February 1991, Hammersmith Odeon, Bob Dylan on the Neverending Tour. Heavy snow and bitterly cold. My mate Hippie Nick and I wandered along at 5ish to see if there were any cheap seats being flogged by the touts, who were taking a huge hit as no-one was buying. We'd check the prices, go for a pint and come back to check prices again, which were dropping and dropping. After five pints and about ten minutes before Bob came on stage, we persudaded one irritable tout to flog us two tickets for a fiver. We celebrated our bargain with a very large joint, went in and sat down. I was asleep within three minutes. Hippy Nick claims he saw the first two songs before he too nodded off. We were woken up by security after the last encore.
I don't know if this qualifies. Years ago I was invited amongst friends to a party at Phil Lynott's house in Richmond. Phil met everyone at the door but apparently also at the party were Clannad and UB40. All I remember is that Phil had a life sized cut out of himself in his nice home.
