How about 'I should have gone to Chelsea when I had the chance' Stevie Gerrard?

I'd go for John Terry as England captain, thug or not he has plenty of passion on the pitch and he's as brave as a lion. I have a sneaking suspicion he's go for Beckham though as it's tradional in Italy for the oldest players to be the captain.

Managed to miss all the football over the weekend as I got completely shit-faced for most of it although I did slip into the CPT to watch the Man Utd v Newcastle game. I thought Man Utd were well below-par and I was very impressed with two of the new signings Newcastle had made in Coloccini and Gutierrez.

I'd rather not talk about the Spurs result. I was rather hoping we'd get off to a better start than that. We're obviously still quite a few players short, especially up front.

Terry is passionate, but I think Ferdinand has a lot better brain for the game. Still don't see why Stevie G seems to have totally slipped out of the running, but it definitely seems to be between those 2. Can't see Beckham getting it, surely he will just be playing a bit part in the next couple of years...

I've been interested by The Adrian Mutu fine story. I have to say I'm on his side. He took a bit of coke (so bloody what), he got sacked and served his ban. Why the hell should he be paying Chelsea ?12m, it's insane!!! They also say the fine was based on what Chelsea had paid for him, but that is something completely beyond his control!

Chelsea should have just suspended his pay whilst he was banned, then put it in the past and kept hold of him!

I would like Gerrard to get it for it his own personal success, but for the sake of Liverpool I'd rather he didn't.

I see your little dig there Sandperson. My original post was supposed to demonstrate what excellent role models Terry and Ferdinand are to young kids. Putting in a transfer request, because your club are mucking you around with your contract isn't exactly on the same level now is it?

Never happened with Giggs or Scholes...or Ronaldo.

That had much more to do with good management and wage structure. In case you hadn't noticed most clubs are hideously mismanaged and full of venal personalities, from players through (especially) agents, to managers and the boards. I noticed the same sort of loyalty and fealty didn't apply to the rest of that generation, Butt, P Neville, Beckham et al. Business is business and football is just business these days.

I don't mind you having your wind-up but don't try and claim Man U has any moral high ground on these matters.

Piers, when did I claim the high ground, moral or otherwise? Players like Butt, Neville,P etc. are still adored at the club and were sold as surplus to requirements (and before you say it, yes Beckham as well) they didn't leave because they weren't being paid enough. As far as Ronaldo goes I don't think he's got the right to be metioned in the same breath as the other two, he will have to be very special this season to make up for his shenanigans.

I just object to certain Scousers who take every post as an opportunity to have a dig at United. Perhaps if they spent more time thinking about the failings of their own team and less time trying to put down the most successful team in Britain for the last 15 years they might have more chance of winning the league. Jealoulsy is a terrible thing.

Terry captain, and Ferdinand Vice Captain, so Stevie G even lost that. Agree that it may be better for Liverpool if he's not captain. I just like a midfield captain more than a defender. I know the defender can marshal from the back, but the midfielder can drive his team forward.

Don't think it really makes any odds in the big scheme of things though, and at least it might make someone like Terry play his heart out like it did for Beckham, who at times when he was captain, was the only one who looked bothered!

That was rather my point, they all wanted to finish their careers there, but were kicked out the moment it didn't suit the club, loyalty and fealty work both ways, and without reasonable expectation that it will hold, the glue is gone.

We can't have our cake and eat it, it's a ruthless market now. I badly miss the days where playing at a club meant something, but those days are gone, and players are pretty ugly souls these days, Ronaldo and slavery being a real nadir, recently at our club Anton Ferdinand rejecting 40K a week, fine fuck off to Sunderland you ungrateful, thick cunt!

Potts was our last true club player I guess, and I always loved and admired Le Tissier (admittedly a sliigggghtlty better player) but I doubt we'll see their like at our clubs again.

Have to say though, I thik sometimes you have to wish a player good luck even if it's them who want to move.

I can't believe any Arsenal fan for example, could have wished Henry any ill after he gave them his best years and wanted one last challenge / pay day before retiring. I feel bad that he hasn't really reached his best form since leaving.

Don't really see how my original post in this discussion was a dig at United. I was merely stating that I don't think Ferdinand or Terry deserve to be England captain through their off pitch antics. How is exactly is that a dig at Manchester United? I think that generally you're the one who has lowered the banter by calling people "bin dippers" etc.

If you don't like a bit of harmless ribbing from one of your rivals, then I suggest you talk about football on a United forum.

    • Ideally I imagine it should be separated from household waste as it's a public health hazard, just like you'd put nappies in strong bags after wrapping them up. Dog poo does seem to be everywhere so I definitely think there should be more dog poo bins again. Again back to cost I imagine. Round in circles we go!
    • I have to wonder who's going to benefit from the Trump tarrifs  Possibly those in tje know who dumped their shares before it happened, banked the cash,  bought shares at rock bottom  and are now waiting for stock that crashed to go up again and make a fortune. But the bigger losers will be Americans who expect industry to move their factories to America, provide jobs and revive the economy, 20 years ago that could have happened but since then most factory jobs can now be done by robots  including warehouse movements, and if a tech company is going to build a new factory they will obviously use robotics and maybe AI to do the work, which means a gluten of goods and no one with the cash to buy them.  America will go into another depression and take the rest of the world with it. Forget the issues Liz Truss and Rachel Reeves combined have caused the economy, the trump tarrifs will make them look like saints by comparison.
