Planning and garage conversion

Does anyone have experience with getting planning approval for converting a garage into a granny flat?

We have an integral garage on one side of our semi-detached house and want to convert it in to a granny/studio flat. This would have its own front door entrance.

Would this be permitted, in principle, under existing regs?
