Louisa
I'm sorry you had a bad experience foxy. It must be very rare to bump into rose on an off day, she's been nothing but lovely and friendly every time I've been in. Maybe you just went in on an off day? The fish and chips I had was very crispy batter and big chunky chips, about average pricing too. Louisa. ' after 2 days.. Then I was refuse a plate as I was eating at the tables outside... There was NO salt and vinegar on the tables. So had to go back in to the counter area.. There was no proper cutlery.. Just Plastic-wood things. She bad mouthed other Chippys in the area.. suggesting THEIR fish was all frozen. which I know is not true.Something restauranteurs should not do.. But It seems .. she once worked / owned SEMAS where if it is the same person she was Always really nice to me.. It is a shame as I was looking for a second fish & Chip shop a bit nearer to home. It's unlikely I will be back and in the evening The new Jaflong Tandoori is 2 doors away. and for an extra fiverI can get a proper meal.. Paying ?8.00 ish for Fish and Chips in a cardboard box is not a good dealFoxy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/119412-wheres-the-best-chippy-in-the-area/page/2/#findComment-1037918 Share on other sites
Louisa
Foxy, I do believe they had some teething problems in their first few days, hence the apparent lacking I. Terms of service etc perhaps? No excuses being made, I'm absolutely sure she would be the first to hold her hands up and admit that.As for the lack of plates outside, I do believe they supply the grease proof boxes which are good for take out food and perhaps you could have requested the proper knife and fork along with plate for the additional cost, but I do believe they were having a few issues and perhaps weren't so attentive for said reasons. When I went in first time, she remembered me from underhill sema's after some prompting, and I was given a few cans of fizzy pop on the house along with a good old chat about the area and how much it's changed. She also told me about the Kennedys pies they're serving and where they come from etc. You can also order certain things over the phone to be cooked so it's ready for your arrival. I would urge you to give Rose a second chance foxy, perhaps return for a sit down meal? Louisa. Pugwash
I have seen Ahmed or his side kick getting fresh chips from the freezer and putting them in to fry also battering fresh fish. I have usually gone in around 7 on a Friday on way home from work and wait around 15 mins whilst every thing is freshly cooked. Not had a soggy batter Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/119412-wheres-the-best-chippy-in-the-area/page/2/#findComment-1038019 Share on other sites
Amanda1979
I am also looking for a decent chippy. We used to love the Sea Cow years ago but it declined over the years. My in-laws are coming to visit on Friday and want fish and chips in the garden so we are looking for takeaway.Am I right in concluding from this thread that Codfellas on Bellenden Road is good apart from the wait?It will be a several person order so planning to order by phone first anyway and I see they go gluten free too.Emily's on North Cross Road is or isn't good?Is Roses on East Dulwich Road the one in the parade of shops with Flying Pig, Papa John's Pizza etc? That is good? The Dulwich Fryer, now Hamlet something I think (near Sains) any good?Any other recommendations? Ann
Amanda 1979, I have used the one by Sainsbury's recently and think it's fine. The large Cod is worth paying for if you like a good portion of fish and I would say a large portion of chips would feed two people easily. Where it breaks down - like so much else in life - is when people try to cut costs.Using the same oil too often. Refrying chips. Worst of all, using cheaper potatoes that will not make a decent chip no matter what you do. I'd say these three are the worst culprits, responsible for most of the bad chips out there. Lowlander
Back in the mid-1980s most fish and chip shops still used beef dripping. The only place I know that still does that in London is the Fryer's Delight in Holborn - any local ones still do it? Is that normal practice in chippies> these days?Certainly the chippy I tried down in Brighton uses Frozen Chips.. The ones that are thin-cut but wide.. and all identical in size. They are crispy on the outside and resemble mash potato on the inside.... They also taste strange.. Yuk..Often served up with a oblong shaped block of fish.. All servered in a cardboard box.. Decent Fish & Chips served on a plate with metal cutlery is a real rarity at the Seaside these days..Well, certainly in Brighton.. and RamsgateFoxy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/119412-wheres-the-best-chippy-in-the-area/page/2/#findComment-1038658 Share on other sites
Louisa
Who remembers Steve's chippy at the bottom of Maxted RD close to the corner of Bellenden? Lovely guy he was, closed sometime in the mid/late 80's, he must have been there for 40 years at least. Louisa. Seabag
My beef with fish and chips is thisI only want a few really nice chips, no more than a dozen, and I don't want hardly any batter. And the batter I do want has to be a really nice THIN golden one.I want gherkin, mushy peas, real lemon and pepper too. This combined seems to throw most chip shop owners, except the lovely one in Beer, Dorset. So I occasionally make my own with homemade tempura batter. It's the only batter that's easier to make when you're in a hurry, else you overthink it. SGHunter
I think Codfellas fish and chips isn't nice at all, Roses is so much better and the people who work there are always lovely too when i go in there! Grok
Chippy at bottom Dog Kennel Hill is rubbish for food, hygiene, and customer service. Emilys is average, and the owner is a nice chap and all, and helps others locally but I have stopped going there due to his incessent non-stop cliches and platitudes. Just give me my fish n chips!Semas has gone down hill. There are no chippies locally that are consistently good. Cant be that hard. DulwichFox
Cod & Chips at Codfellas today 12.30.. Golden brown crispy batter..Beautiful moist whiteflakesCut from these beauties..If chips look like small amout it is because I ask for a smaller portion. They have 3 fryers.. 1 Oil.. 1 Beef Dripping ...and one a combo...They said people my age tend to like beef dripping but of course you get a choice..Foxy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/119412-wheres-the-best-chippy-in-the-area/page/2/#findComment-1039443 Share on other sites

Jeremy
Actually ended up getting F&C from Roses, and it was good. Huge bit of fish, plump and flaky, lovely crisp batter. Chips were not as golden and crispy as I like, but fine. Tbh one fish and small chips plenty of food for two people.
