I'm sorry you had a bad experience foxy. It must be very rare to bump into rose on an off day, she's been nothing but lovely and friendly every time I've been in. Maybe you just went in on an off day? The fish and chips I had was very crispy batter and big chunky chips, about average pricing too.

I went in on her third day and they had a BIG ad . outside saying FREE CHIPS

Well I was charged and she said 'we have stopped doing that now.. ' after 2 days..

Then I was refuse a plate as I was eating at the tables outside...

There was NO salt and vinegar on the tables. So had to go back in to the counter area..

There was no proper cutlery.. Just Plastic-wood things.

She bad mouthed other Chippys in the area.. suggesting THEIR fish was all frozen. which I know is not true.

Something restauranteurs should not do..

But It seems .. she once worked / owned SEMAS where if it is the same person she was Always really nice to me..

It is a shame as I was looking for a second fish & Chip shop a bit nearer to home.

It's unlikely I will be back and in the evening The new Jaflong Tandoori is 2 doors away. and for an extra fiver

I can get a proper meal..

Paying ?8.00 ish for Fish and Chips in a cardboard box is not a good deal

Foxy

Foxy, I do believe they had some teething problems in their first few days, hence the apparent lacking I. Terms of service etc perhaps? No excuses being made, I'm absolutely sure she would be the first to hold her hands up and admit that.

As for the lack of plates outside, I do believe they supply the grease proof boxes which are good for take out food and perhaps you could have requested the proper knife and fork along with plate for the additional cost, but I do believe they were having a few issues and perhaps weren't so attentive for said reasons.

When I went in first time, she remembered me from underhill sema's after some prompting, and I was given a few cans of fizzy pop on the house along with a good old chat about the area and how much it's changed. She also told me about the Kennedys pies they're serving and where they come from etc. You can also order certain things over the phone to be cooked so it's ready for your arrival.

I would urge you to give Rose a second chance foxy, perhaps return for a sit down meal?

Louisa.

I have seen Ahmed or his side kick getting fresh chips from the freezer and putting them in to fry also battering fresh fish. I have usually gone in around 7 on a Friday on way home from work and wait around 15 mins whilst every thing is freshly cooked. Not had a soggy batter

I am also looking for a decent chippy. We used to love the Sea Cow years ago but it declined over the years. My in-laws are coming to visit on Friday and want fish and chips in the garden so we are looking for takeaway.

Am I right in concluding from this thread that Codfellas on Bellenden Road is good apart from the wait?

It will be a several person order so planning to order by phone first anyway and I see they go gluten free too.

Emily's on North Cross Road is or isn't good?

Is Roses on East Dulwich Road the one in the parade of shops with Flying Pig, Papa John's Pizza etc? That is good?

The Dulwich Fryer, now Hamlet something I think (near Sains) any good?

Any other recommendations?

How often the oil is changed and what oil it is, how many times you fry,

potato type I suppose are some variables.

Science or Art :)

Yes, it is pretty simple. Where it breaks down - like so much else in life - is when people try to cut costs.

Using the same oil too often. Refrying chips. Worst of all, using cheaper potatoes that will not make a decent chip no matter what you do. I'd say these three are the worst culprits, responsible for most of the bad chips out there.

Frozen chips? Is that normal practice in chippies these days?

Certainly the chippy I tried down in Brighton uses Frozen Chips..

The ones that are thin-cut but wide.. and all identical in size.

They are crispy on the outside and resemble mash potato on the inside..

.. They also taste strange.. Yuk..

Often served up with a oblong shaped block of fish.. All servered in a cardboard box..

Decent Fish & Chips served on a plate with metal cutlery is a real rarity at the Seaside these days..

Well, certainly in Brighton.. and Ramsgate

Foxy

My beef with fish and chips is this

I only want a few really nice chips, no more than a dozen, and I don't want hardly any batter. And the batter I do want has to be a really nice THIN golden one.

I want gherkin, mushy peas, real lemon and pepper too. This combined seems to throw most chip shop owners, except the lovely one in Beer, Dorset.

So I occasionally make my own with homemade tempura batter. It's the only batter that's easier to make when you're in a hurry, else you overthink it.

Chippy at bottom Dog Kennel Hill is rubbish for food, hygiene, and customer service. Emilys is average, and the owner is a nice chap and all, and helps others locally but I have stopped going there due to his incessent non-stop cliches and platitudes. Just give me my fish n chips!

Semas has gone down hill.

There are no chippies locally that are consistently good. Cant be that hard.

Cod & Chips at Codfellas today 12.30..

Golden brown crispy batter..

Beautiful moist whiteflakes

Cut from these beauties..

If chips look like small amout it is because I ask for a smaller portion.

They have 3 fryers.. 1 Oil.. 1 Beef Dripping ...and one a combo...

They said people my age tend to like beef dripping but of course you get a choice..

    • I would disagree that the tables outside the Blue Brick bothered nobody. They were not within the cafe's curtilage (one table was even placed on the other side of the road!) but on a narrow public footpath where pedestrians have a "public right of way". Added to that, some customers rearranged the tables so the footpath was blocked completely.
    • Walking last Friday early evening anywhere near where the bottom end of Lordship Lane meets the Goose Green roundabout, one would have been directly confronted - as I was - with this scene: Outside the East Dulwich Tavern an impenetrable phalanx of pushing yobs, shouty louts and selfish yahoos pressed outward from the open doors of this establishment, past the curtilage (the land in front of and owned by the business), all across the public right of way, to the kerbside. This was the situation all the way along, end to end. I watched as passersby, old people, children, parents with buggies, people just going about their business, were forced by these booze-sucking bellowing scumbags onto the road - where, at that hour, traffic rushed endlessly off the roundabout. We have, I realised, somehow become so used to this revolting spectacles as to believe it to be inevitable. It is not. This is why I'm dropping this post. Enough really is enough. This roiling boozy blockade represents a total failure by all the responsible authorities - the licencing authority, for example - but most of all (yet once more, again, as ever), by Southwark Council. Two very different comparisons to give you some perspective: 1. The Kings Head pub on the corner of Albermarle and Stafford Streets, London SW1. Here too, patrons like to drink and chat outside on a warm evening - why should they not. But here, on the latter side a line marks the curtilage on the pavement. Drinkers remain, respectfully, in good order, within the line, watched, quietly and carefully, by a security guard. I wager good money this arrangement is a condition of this pub's licence. 2. The Blue Brick is a cafe in the quiet backstreets of East Dulwich, on the corners of Fellbrigg and Shawbury Roads. Until a few months ago, about half its covers were tables out on the pavement. They bothered nobody. Oh! But they extended all of several centimetres too far into the footpath, so into fearless action swang Southwark Council officers - and now these tables are gone. Result, eh? "Well you see," some wiseacre said to me, "There needs to be a complaint." Not actually true, but for sure this is all too often how local authorities get pushed to do what they should be doing. Hard to think why a complaint trumps, say (and god forbid!) a child being injured on the road. In which circumstance, of course!, Southwark would swing into noisy, virtue-signalling, belated action. But in any case let this post be considered a big, very definite COMPLAINT about this prolonged abuse of our public right of way. I invite readers who agree with me to add their voices. Oh, and all those wee local ward councillors might get off their chufties, defy their party managers, and actually help sort this scandal out. Thanks for reading, Lee Scoresby
    • Hi there, I saw that Google lists the park opening time as 7:30am, but I was wondering if it might actually open earlier than that - maybe anyone who’s out running early or passing by has noticed?
