Alan Medic
Would like to spend a few days (3-4) in rural(ish) England but not too far from ED. Want somewhere with self catering, probably down south. Needs to be where there are interesting walks. Could be by the sea but doesn't have to be. Any suggestions please? LadyNorwood
Arundel or Chichester - easy to get to the beach, walk the South Downs Way, short drive to Portsmouth (and Brighton in the opposite direction), also look at The Witterings... numbers
I'd say Dorset (or Norfolk of course!) but closer to ED you can't go wrong with the South Downs, beautiful walks and lovely scenery, fresh sea air.Burling gap, seven sisters, beachy head. Louisa
North Devon or North Cornwall further afield, closer to home the north downs are beautiful and a short trip away. Somewhere like Downe or Cudham, very nice scenery and walks.Louisa. MissDumpling
Sussex Weald - no distance and good walking, birding etc. Ashdown Forest is a treat for Winnie the Pooh lovers; Bluebell railway is a nostalgic delight. Seabag
Then Arundel is great, as the surrounding areas are beautifulAmberly, Mid hurst, Petworth, and back lanes to the country pubs are just perfectThen nearby is also Burpham, The George & Dragon and maybe cricket at the castle ground, but the pub is right next door to the other cricket ground for local matchesBognor is crap, go take a look. But Goodwood estate and Petworth house are great, a little further out is this placehttp://www.charleston.org.ukAs you drive down, take the A29 for the most scenic route Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/118783-suggestions-for-short-break-in-the-country-please/#findComment-1035796 Share on other sites

woodland
another vote for Arundel - stayed in a lovely cottage there walking distance to the town. The white swan (I think that is its name) does great food too.
