How old is he/she? Do you have a crate for the pup? He/she will be missing brothers and sisters now. If not I suggest you get one so they can retreat into it and have it as a haven. Give the pup a vet blanket, a white one that looks like a curly sheepskin to sleep on and a piece of clothing/towel that smells like you. What room are you keeping the dog in? I kept mine (recent) one in the kitchen with a babygate across the door until she got acclimatised to the house. I did let her explore the house when I was with her. I found it was easier to housetrain the pup in the kitchen. I was lucky that my dog slept fine on her own and didn't whine at night. I'm sure there are other tips out there that people can recommend but I can't think of anymore.
How long have you had her? Are you tiring her out so she will sleep? Puppies should sleep a lot. Give her something that smells like you like I said above. Be careful with the teddy bear as she could rip it apart and swallow something. Some dogs are more whiny than others. Are you feeding her small meals? If you got her from a breeder then you could ask them for advice as to that particular breed's quirks/needs.
No, don't let the pup sleep on the bed !!! You can't let them become a little dictator now. They need boundaries, like kids. You can't keep rushing to them every time they cry or whine. Don't feel guilty. It's very easy to feel sorry and protective of a puppy because they are so cute but you have to be strong. Leave the room for 10 minute or so and then when you come back don't over fuss the pup. Just talk to them and say hello. Then pet them a bit later on. Then leave the room for longer and longer. They have to learn that the crying doesn't get you running to them. Be strong and firm. You are not being cruel.

JLCK,

Your pups behaviour is normal. For a good 6-8 weeks of her life she has been part of a litter with her mum around for most of the time. Being on her own is new and a bit scary. Nonetheless it is something she needs to get used to.

First buy a book: "The perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey. This will tell you everything you need to know about basic puppy care and training using kind methods. Once pups vaccinations are all up to date join a puppy class. Beckenham dog training are the best around and, again, use kind methods only.

You should try to get a puppy pen (Pets at Home do one). During the day get pup used to a regime of a series of 10 mins play, out for wees and then pop in pen with her bed and get on with whatever it is you do around the house. This way she gets used to the idea that you do not stay close by all the time but that you come back often. The abilty to deal with separation will build up over time. Cate is right don't go and comfort her if she whimpers a bit. If you are confident that nothing is awry just get on with whatever you are doing but return to the room often- but more or less ignoring her. First let her learn to cope with you being in the room but getting on with stuff and then leave the room for a minute at a time and build up through the day.

Make sure that you have a really regular regime of feeding, play and wees (after play or feeding and before bed) all pups need to wee. Getting all this right, so pup can make sense of her little life, will help her settle and feel more secure.

These first few weeks of a pups life are really vital in terms of socialisation and building a bond. Remember she is only little so do be patient. Get the book asap. What breed is she?

Please let me know if you need any other advice.

Hi Everyone,

thanks for all the good advice - the puppy is now getting the idea! Though she has an upset tum so I'm having to take her out of the crate more often. I'm loathed to leave her in there over night....she could get herself into a complete mess. Would it ruin the training to give her access to a litter tray until she is back to normal?

Also whats the best dog food to prevent an upset tum? I have her on James Wellbeloved puppy dry food.

Thanks

James Wellbeloved is a good food usually. If a dog has an upset tum you should stop normal dog food for a day/and/or just feed them white rice and a bit of cooked chicken or white fish. Then reintroduce the food and see what happens. I would just keep a lot of newspapers on the floor in the kitchen and confine her there but keep taking her out a lot. What breed is she?

Does anyone know who ED Parent is?

She has a cat that belongs to me - I've had him and his sister since they were tiny kittens. I had him neutered and vaccinated. He was the runt of the litter and a complete weakling when he was little. He's been going missing for extended periods for months and has become very fat, so I reckoned someone had been supplementing his dinners here. I haven't seen him for ages now and am very worried as I have only just seen this thread - it looks like he has been adopted and microchipped by someone else. I really can't believe it - it can't be near me as I have never seen any flyers or anyone looking for an owner. I'm on East Dulwich Grove. I wasn't too worried as he has always come back before, none the worse for wear, but a friend found this thread today and just called me.

If anyone knows this person or has seen this cat, can you please contact me urgently via PM? I am so upset. I've tried keeping him in but each time he's disappeared again, probably into this persons home.

I have all my vets records and photographs of him growing up over the last 3 years. Can anyone help??! Even if I have a name, maybe I can contact the local vets and try and track him down through them.

thanks

J

Thanks Zeban- have done

My ginger cat is missing.

Does anyone know ED Parent? Does anyone had a phone number for her? Her address is on one of her posts - it's a few doors away from my house but it is listed on Findaproperty as to let and it looks completely empty - no lights on this evening.

I haven't seen my cat in over a month and it looks like they moved about then.

Can anyone help? I'm so upset. Will post photos when I can figure out how to make them small enoughto be uploaded.

You probably mean Test Match Special PGC. That should get the little pup to sleep.

    • I think it was more amazement that anyone uses cheques on a large enough scale anymore for it to be an issue.    Are cheque books even issued to customers by banks anymore? That said government institutions seem to be one of the last bastions of this - the last cheque I think I received was a tax rebate in 2016 from HMRC.  It was very irritating.
    • I know you have had a couple of rather condescending replies, advising you to get to grips with technology and live in the modern world. I sympathise with you. I think some of us should try to be a bit more empathetic and acknowledge not everyone is a technophile. Try to see things from a perspective that is not just our own. Also, why give the banking sector carte blanche to remove any sort of human/public facing role. Is this really what we want?

I still have a very long way to go and appreciate anything anyone is able to contribute ❤️   I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for local businesses/establishments that may be able to help? I was thinking maybe Dulwich College?  the link again is here https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/tmjhelp ❤️
