Wilhelm
First 'proper' gig... Dire Straits, 'On Every Street' tour, about 1990. At Wembley Arena(!). Don't you judge me. citizenED
I saw Iggy Pop at the Rainbow in Finsbury Park circa '81. He made his entrance by sliding down a rope, barechested, through clouds of dry ice. What a hero. ontheedge
girl in my class snook out her bedroom window to go see the horslips aged 13 her mother who was a teacher discovered her gone and went to the local hall in her curlers and dragged her off the dance floor by her hair. Still a joke in our town! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11728-first-ever-gig/page/2/#findComment-331395 Share on other sites

I think mine was Stackridge at> Goldsmith's College in '73.blimey ! wish I'd been at that , wish I'd seen the korgis at goldsmiths ! mine was Rush at Southampton Gaumont 1977 , Hemispheres tour , absolutely musically perfect in every way , but really not my cup of tea at all ,rows of youths doing air guitar bleuurrrtgh !!! I was just bowing to peer group pressure , in this case my cousin and all his mates , who were the only friends I had at the time , so I was seeking approval , f*ck only knows why because most of them were a bunch of w*****s from what I recall .first real proper gig(s) that meant anything to me was when they used to have gigs on a sunday at the Lyceum on the strand , and for a fiver you could come up and see all sorts , its all a bit of a blur , but I came up from the wilds of hampshire , and saw The Fall , The Fire Engines , The Pop Group , The Thompson Twins (long before they went shit)The Cure , The Buzzcocks, The Au Pairs , The Passions , Echo and the Bunnymen , The Psychedelic Furs , etc etc ... came up several times so its all a blur .... whoever promoted those gigs was a bloody star ! we're talking 80/81 .then there was the time Captain Beefheart came to Guildford civic in 81 .... bloody great gig , and one of his last ..... saw Bill Bruford (out of Yes ) the same year , same venue which again was musically perfect but somewhat lacking ,and his band all wore stupid yellow tracksuits , what was that all about ? :)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11728-first-ever-gig/page/2/#findComment-331405 Share on other sites
flapjackdavey
Narnia Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> I think my first was probably Horslips, a long> time ago. Anyone ever hear of them?I used to listen to Horslips loads when I was 17/18 ,they struck a chord with me then , I really like the way they used to take a trad Irish tune as a template and build an original song from it ( eg the blind can't lead the blind ), I've tried listening to them again recently and much of it hasnt really stood the test of time,(imho) which is sad because some of their songs are beautiful, but they used to spoil it by going a bit too guitar god , and Hobbit special effects ( I guess thats the 70's for ya ) and for me that doesnt really do it these days , certain songs do still strike the same chord they did gnummmphhty years ago though . I wish I had seen them play, however. I'm sure they were great live .:)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11728-first-ever-gig/page/2/#findComment-331407 Share on other sites

Peckhamgatecrasher
The reason I remember David Essex so well is that the 'hardest' girl in our class was reported to have gone completely ga ga and out of character - would have been wonderful to see that. womanofdulwich
I think it was Slade at Freshers Week 1979 at the Penthouse Suite Sheffield. Not a good memory, closely followed by the Beat the following week at The Limit Club ( not much happened on the Isle of Wight in the late 70's). benjaminty
Michael Jackson supported by Kim Wilde on the BAD tour at Old Wembley July 1988. Mostly memorable for the 2 girls we met from Brighton and and a very tall ginger bloke who looked like the detective sarge guy from the Bill who got a ribbing through the entire gig. "We're the Kids of America" was the highlight for me. HonaloochieB
T Rex at the Brixton Sundown, 1973. Utterly magical. The ten minute version of 'Get It On' with the guitar solo played in part with a tambourine? A thing of majestic beauty. If anyone happens to have a bootleg of the concert, then please keep it the f*ck away from me, no sense in spoiling a good memory.
