Eh?!

No, after 21 December which was the winter solstice! :)

But it's only recently becoming noticeable, to me anyway :)

Do some research

Think you need to do some research DD - days do get lighter from the winter solstice, as the length of daylight hours increases. It's not lighter earlier in the mornings until (this year) January 3rd, but the total amount of light hours in the day has been increasing since the solstice - and sunset has been getting later since then too.

All explained here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-30549149

ETA example:

December 21st Sunrise 8.04 Sunset 15.54 Total daylight hours 7.49.40

December 22nd Sunrise 8.04 Sunset 15.54 Total daylight hours 7.49.44

December 23rd Sunrise 8.05 Sunset 15.55 Total daylight hours 7.49.54

and so on...

I'd always thought (2nd hand knowledge etc) that once we hit the summer/winter solstice dates of the 21st, there was a period of about two weeks whereby there was little change in daylight hours. Then once you go beyond the two weeks it becomes more noticeable again. Technically the days may get longer after the 21st Dec, but it's so minimal I doubt anyone is able to perceive that the previous day was 10 seconds shorter, not even Sue :)...

Do you know that there's a forge in Peckham that makes these knives

Pricey yes, but they're worth a visit just to see how they make stuff and they are friendly enough too

Blenhiem Forge just off Bellenden Road area

Well each small increase is obviously - small.

But added together they become noticeable.

About now.

Yes. I think there was a program / news item about that place on TV.

The knives are VERY expensive but also not too Aesthetically pleasing if I remember rightly.

I don't have a safe place to store my new knife so it stays in it's box at the mo.

It is extremely sharp and although I have the equipment to sharpen all my other chef knives

my new knife will need professional sharpening. Not many places do Japanese Knives.

A little change is still longer. Dog duck seems to be rather incorrect, though rendell's link did teach me something new - that sunrise still gets later for a couple of weeks after Dec 21, even though the days are still lengthening.

  • 3 weeks later...
