Jah Lush
Come to think of it I've never really considered work as a career. It's always been jobs and crap jobs at that. Brendan
Me too. Never bothered to look where I was going and ended up somewhere in the general malaise of middle management pretty much by mistake. Still, there are biscuits and a comfortable chair. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11714-careers/page/2/#findComment-331278 Share on other sites
SteveT
Most jobs are dull and boring but we need the cash.Jobs used to be brutishly hard and doing them shortened your life considerably, and you were knackered sometime in your thirties. *Bob*
I am a purveyor of rotten muzak. One day, I hope to write something truly abysmal which makes me a (thoroughly undeserved) fortune - so that I can retire to the sofa permanently and spend more time with Columbo. Robyn0312
Engineering Geologist, although I'm emmigrating to further my career. I have done voluntary work in the past but I don't think I'd be more fulfilled if I was still doing that now... absentminded
I'm a furniture conservator, specialising in gilding and decorative finishes. I used to be a volunteer for Age Concern, visiting the elderly. It was really rewarding, and you really felt like you were making a difference in someone's life. I'd throughly recommend it. Pugwash
Started working life as a clerk, then did residential child care, then admin work -various promotions. My then boss heard me discussing psychology with another colleague and asked about my academic career and was surprised that I had not been to uni. She got me on day release at Birkbeck College to do a Diploma in Urban Community Studies ( paid for by the firm)In the meantime, I did lots of voluntary work Gingerbread, Residents Association, Political Party, Community Centre, Disability groups.Worked as a casual market researcher in social policy for a few months.Took redundancy and fulfilled a life long ambition - a degree followed by a post graduate professional diploma ( funded in part from my redundancy pay). More voluntary work including trustee in a counselling organisation. running workshops, mentoring individuals etc. My voluntary work was instrumental in getting a post graduate diploma at Goldsmiths, as well as the fact that I had and still am, caring for 2 disabled relatives, my grandchildren (during holidays I help out etc).I work as a social worker with adults - despite the stress and paperwork, onc of the most interesting/frustrating/rewarding/no 2 days the same/heart breaking (at times)- but love the work.
