Ruth_Baldock
Hello all.Sebastian is now being weaned onto solids- he has 3 meals a day (I use the word 'meal' loosely, pureed stuff that smells of catfood would NOT satisfy me, but he seems happy enough...). However, his last feed of the night, around 11pm, is formula. Now that he's on solids and a week shy of 6 months, should we be using follow on milk, or is it still okay to use aptamil one? He also has formula now and then when he's away from me (expressing doesn't work)Hope heads aren't too sore from the meetup last night, sorry to miss you all, will we be doing another one in July? Fuschia
Follow on milk is just a ploy to get round the ban on first formula advertising (and being harder to digest, some babies reject it anyway)I wouldn't bother Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11667-follow-on-milk/#findComment-330062 Share on other sites
Ruth_Baldock
Thanks, Fuscia, I guessed as much but definitely wanted a second opinion from the experts (Yes, I do consider the Mum's on the EDF to be experts!) Yorkie
Hi Ruth,I've been mix feeding since 7 months and just used the Aptamil one that's suitable from birth. I was v dubious about follow on too (OH thought we should be using it, I blame the adverts!) but as she took to the formula so well, having been such a sicky baby who developed allergies as soon as we started solids, I didn't fancy rocking the boat. I'm sure a HV (or book or website, paranoid first mum have done a lot of reading...) said that you could just keep going with whichever formula you'd started baby on. Fuschia
In term sor iron and nutrients it's much the same as first formula. It's casein (curds) based rather than whey though (like hungry baby milk)Old fashioned formula really, sure they make it with the leftovers from first formula production! Belle
hi...i was very dubious too but then after weaning my son went through a phase of not drinking much milk and we were worried in case he wasn't getting enough. We did check the difference between SMA Gold and follow-on and from memory the latter was slightly more concentrated - ie we thought it was worth switching in case it meant he was getting more nutrients etc even if drinking less (if that makes sense). In general though I think there's not a lot of difference and if he still likes the Aptamil you've always given him it's not worth changing now. nicolemodesti
Stick with Aptamil 1...we did with our boy from 6 months when he was breast and formula fed due to me returning to work full time. Didn't bother with follow on as it didn't make sense plus he dropped some feeds.
