SarahMeynell
Just seen an ad for a new series on BBC3 'Peckham Finishing School' - does anyone know about this!? 'In a climate of increasing economic polarisation and a widening social class system, four young women from Peckham in South London have the opportunity to meet their affluent counterparts and spend 9 days showing them the reality of life on the other side of the tracks.' northlondoner
This is the kind of simple minded crap that's gonna get that channel axed - especially "in a climate of increasing economic polarisation " Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11602-peckham-finishing-school/#findComment-328922 Share on other sites

PeckhamRose
Great post there Huggers. Just like Mickey Flanagan says about living in East Dulwich, "there are people in just the next postcode who are still eating white bread".Such kids can already see life on the other side of the tracks: they watch Desperate Housewives don't they? What's wrong wiv'em.And the posh lot watch EastEnders, don't they? Sorted. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11602-peckham-finishing-school/#findComment-328952 Share on other sites
Jeremy
Low-brow, sensationalist, and pointless. The posh girls and the Peckham girls were equally unlikeable.I quite enjoyed it."If I came from the same background as you, I'd probably be smashing windows and... and robbing banks and things too" Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/11602-peckham-finishing-school/#findComment-333043 Share on other sites
HAL9000
I missed it - clashed with a fascinating program about primitive forest-dwelling tribesmen in Papua New Guinea - spellbinding stuff.Reminded me of Peckham, come to think of it. Bic Basher
It's repeated on BBC Three at 11.50pm tonight.Three of the "Peckham Sista's" live in SE15, a forth from what I watched lives in ED as the home counties woman who went to see her went on the 12 down Barry Road. PeckhamRose
I hated this show and I did see it. It was offensive cheap television, and I watched it because it was about Peckham. Of course we see those (types of)girls and poverty and so on and on, but we all know that poverty is in many places including Chelsea (World's End, for example), but Peckham has fabulous architecture and a very active Society and Choumert Square and lots of people from all professions live here as well as single folk, families, a big artist community, and it's a microcosm of society in itself. The programme makers even acknowledged that it had - actually I forgot how many - different races of people from so many countries but then implied that that was a bad thing. Rye Lane is our centre / hub, and I am not keen on Rye Lane, though I am not frightened or appalled at it. It's Little Africa. And that's fine. But the programme makers wanted to make a cheap point and the Peckham girls were rude, and offensive, just as if they found themselves in Virginia Water they'd be the subject of rudeness too. Oh how ironic they showed them going to church without voicing the question that if so many people go to these 43 or however many churches, how come there's still so much crime?! Godfearing my ar$e! Anyway, I still love Peckham and Peckham Rye, and the programme made the production company look bad, not Peckham.
