Yes, it's been on you tube (though a slightly different version - before cropping I guess?) for a little while & was the subject of a mumsnet thread. I watched it a few times about a week ago or longer and now I have the song constantly going round in my head. Yes it made me quite teary too Molly. I cry so easily since having kids - it's quite annoying sometimes.

Luuuuurverly ad' though.

Darn it! Hate to be manipulated by dastardly advertising types but gotta hand it to 'em - it's beautifully done and they clearly know their target market coz I was welling up by the time we got to the birthday cake. Mind you, tears come to my eyes every time the stars turn into blossom on I.T.N.G. Definately gravidity related in my case - pre-baby I sat dry eyed through Schindler's List, It's a Wonderful Life, Dumbo - you name it. Thank god it wasn't an ad. for Tesco - how bad would we feel then?

Oh - I think it wears off tho. Polled my own mum about this ad. and she replied "yes I've seen it, makes me puke". That's lovely, grandma.

Ha, Claire, that is very funny re your Mum - my Mum was visiting earlier this week and I showed it to her and she welled up (at the grand age of 81) just like I did....I guess maybe you have a better chance than me of it wearing off by the sound of it.

Whichever ad agency they are using, they are doing a good job for them I reckon.

M

I actually watched a whole documentary about John Lewis at Christmas time (I'll watch anything), which included them showing the creative process they went through with the ad agency to get the Xmas ad right. It was a small agency. I wish I could remember the name. Their (John Lewis') branding guy seemed very very good. We are good little consumers aren't we!!!

I like this advert too. As a matter of fact I was in John Lewis in Bluewater this week and they were playing it on the televisions for sale! It is very similar to an advert that aired in America three years ago for Mother's Day - basically the same premise so not sure if it is the same agency or someone really liked the idea!

Love this ad. There was an article about it in the Guardian last week:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/apr/30/women-love-john-lewis-ad

And re sobbing at everything, I found myself watching an episode of Airline last night (don't judge me) and sobbed my eyes out when a mum had to tell her 2 year-old son that they probably wouldn't be going on an aeroplane later on.

Cheers, Molly. Believe me you wouldn't be laughing if she was your Mum! (Joking, she's ace). 'Cause in the olden days John Lewis had a policy of no advertising and they also used to have a fantastic haberdashery department - I guess you have to move with the times. It's still a good place to pop in if you need the loo in the West End.

    • I'm glad you are making good use of your car, but bemused how you are saving on petrol by only half filling every 3-4 weeks? Unless this prevents you using the car as often as you would like, surely you would use just the same amount of petrol, and spend the same amount of money, if you filled it up completely every 6 - 8 weeks? Have I missed something here?

    • Would Leon install a new double oven? Our eye level double oven was installed when we had our kitchen installed around 20 years ago and will need to be replaced with similar. I think we had 2 people to install it then - so does Leon work alone?
    • My car was registered in 2004. Automatic, ULEZ compatible.  Used to use it daily for work until 2016 when retired. Still used 3-5 days weekly after that as was doing voluntary work. My mobility has gradually declined and  it is painful to walk.. Family live in Kent, Essex and Sussex - so need car to visit them. My car battery is 2 years old - when had to call out RAC to assist at home as it was dead, they found it was the original battery installed in 2004!! My car is essential - shopping each week, being able to go to garden centres, or DIY stores, taking the cat to the vet and  other social activities. I now only half fill with petrol every 3- 4 weeks, so save that way. I am careful  with my finances and would be lost without the car. It is regularly maintained (Turners).
