Very strange- we were always warned of the poisonous nature of mercury by our physics teacher screaming 'don't touch it'- reminds me of a story about the Cavendish laboratory. In the '70s it was used by social scientists and the staff got ill due to the mercury under the floorboards poisoning the air with it's vapour- I found this
