I am looking for ideas for local things to do as a bit of a birthday treat - any suggestions? I'm moving abroad soon, so I have asked for family and friends not to buy me physical gifts. I was interested in the chocolate making at The Melange, but there are no classes before I leave in June. I'd quite like to do something where I can have fun learning something new...any ideas?

Thanks.

I do like the pottery idea! However, all my stuff has already been shipped to Australia and I'm already having to get rid of things I'd like, but won't fit in my suitcase - so not sure I'd have space for any pottery.

I also like the wine tasting, all not sure I'm that civilised. The idea of spitting wine out horrifies me :-)

Any cooking classes nearby anyone know of?

If it helps you to decide (and yes I know I'm biased) absolutely no one I have been to a wine tasting with, and I have been to many, have spat out the wine. Personally I just can't bring myself to do it, our wine is SO delicious! Kate does (the owner who does the tastings) but that's because she does so many different wine based activities in a day she'd be completely plastered by 11am if she wasn't spitting some out. And I wouldn't worry about it being over civilised either. Oh the stories I could tell you! In fact several customers have come in the morning after specifically to apologise...........!

You could always make a gift to leave here for someone, you have to pick the fired items a week or so later....

There is a lovely local lady called Kulwant who comes to your house to cook for your dinner party and provides a demonstration of how to cook the most fabulous Indian food. I went to one of these dinner parties about four years ago and I still cook her recipes now. They are fabulous. If you PM me, I will give you her email address, I can't find a web site for her but she still cooks, because I am still on her mailing list.

Dulwich Picture Gallery does art classes for adults, and someone on here has advertised cooking courses. Likewise several people offer language classes, which might be useful for when you are moving abroad. Learning to make a simple British dish or cake/biscuits etc might be of use to you when you are starting your new life overseas (presuming it is a new life and you are not going back to somewhere you know well.)

    • I agree re rents, but I don't think you can compare Croydon and Bromley with East Dulwich. Different kettles of fish. They both had, or possibly still have, big what used to be called "shopping centres" rather than just high streets. I think the one in Croydon is being "regenerated" or whatever the word is, isn't it? Also shopping habits are changing. Where once you would go to a physical  shop to buy things, now many things are bought online, where apart from the convenience there is more choice, and you can easily compare prices and see reviews. Re Lidl in Dulwich, I knew a very well off person with a house on the Thames in London plus various other places including a flat in Venice (!), who shopped in Lidl because she said their parmesan was excellent 😀 My grandmother used to be very sniffy about M&S (in the days before it became known by its initials) 😀 I think it would be great to have a Lidl nearer than Camberwell or Peckham, but I can't see it happening, sadly. I'd also like to see a Waitrose, preferably replacing Sainsbury's, but that isn't going to happen either, also sadly.
    • An Aldi or Lidl at the Harvester site would be useful. But, there’s a Lidl close by in Peckham.
    • Vispring, I'm not a poet so I don't have enough vocabulary to gush about it, best money I ever spent. Open your wallet, they say you spend a third of your life rafting on it (probably more these days with Netflix).
    • Ah wonderful, I'll pop in and see him One more day and then the fundraiser will close. Just £70 needed to get to £1,500. Thank you all for your generosity and support. Private messages have been lovely.
