Roof bars

Are cheap roof bars a false economy? I note on Amazon there are fairly well reviewed ones for 40 quid, but Halfords are at least twice the price for a well known brand.

If you get the cheap ones and they warp under weight, then a roof bar on your roof bars is out of the question. So somewhat related.

my independent garage told me to go with roof bars from the car manufacturer (in my case VW) as they would fit best and carry load best; so bought some on ebay and had no problems

I got the ?40 ones off Amazon. Will report back with tales of woe...or otherwise.

I got the Thule ones for my car. Expensive but sooooo easy to put on and take off.

Yep - ease of putting on and taking off probably key issue on mine, but I can live with that a few times a year.

Otherwise, drove with bike to Brighton on the week-end, bike rack stayed on roof bars, nothing moved, pretty chuffed with my bargain.

The "other" brand at Halfords (can't remember what it is) are Thule's older aero design, now made for Halfords. A bit cheaper and very good, although missing the key locks.

Exodus perhaps Bobbsy? That's the brand of my bike rack. That was pretty good too, for ?25.

Exodus, yes that it. ta. I needed new wider bars for a newer car, but was able to use the same Thule feet and bike rack. The bars were about ?30 cheaper than the new Thule equivalent.
