Why doesn't the EDF make a charge for advertising in the For sale and Wanted sections? surely the days of providing this service gratis are over?

Say, minimum ?1 to advertise in the for sale section and 10% of sale price goes to EDF admin. Minimum ?1 to post in Wanted section. Minimum ?1 to advertise something free and minimum ?1 to take/accept something free.

From what I see there must be at least 10 for sale ads and 10 wanted ads every day.

20 x 7 x 52 = ?7,280 before your 10%

How do you administer it? Provide a sort of old fashioned PO box facility for all sales/wanted so everything goes through you rather than private truncations.

Probably because a lot of people would just turn to Gumtree, where the last time I advertised something it was free.

Or Freecycle for things they were giving away.

I prefer to use the forum because I see it as a local community thing, but if I had to pay to advertise something I was selling for a tenner, I wouldn't.

Barbara Scott, the director of Dulwich Helpline, came to give a talk to the Dulwich Community Council meeting last night. A very impressive and capable woman, running a brill organisation with 220 volunteers. Apparently their Southwark funding is probably secure but their PCT funding is up in the air...

Maybe we need to drop her a line (:)) to see if she's interested in opening up a justgiving account?

I Agree With HAL900 If you don't want a Item and can't be bothered to sell it then why do you care what happens to it otherwise. If people are using there time to make money out of free items then they obviously need the money and so therefore better the item helps someone then just lying at the bottom of a bin somewhere.

Because if several people want an item, some people - including me - would rather it went to a person who was going to make use of it themselves.

I've got nothing against people making money out of items offered free, however what I do object to is people lying about the fact that they're doing it and saying that they want it for their own use when actually they don't.

Sorry to revisit this old thread, by I do get annoyed by people who take advantage of the good nature of others.

Recently I spotted somebody who was asking for free furniture for their new flat. The line went something like "I just about managed to save enough money to buy my first flat, but I can't afford any furniture, please help". A few weeks later they were advertising a furnished flat for rent.

Did you flag that up in their flat advertisement? I remember seeing that first advert where they were asking for things to furnish the flat with.
