I am sure Aston is great, but he quoted us ?40 per hour where two other people also recommended here were ?25 per hour, so we have not used him. We assumed he was very busy and didn't want our job which is fair enough of course, but it did strike us as a rather high rate!

Aston did a small job for me yesterday, hanging pictures and helping me carry an armchair up an awkward staircase.

He was good at fitting me in at short notice, kept me informed about arrival time and did the job carefully and efficiently. I would recommend.

Another very positive review of Aston's work. He fitted a clothesmaid laundry airer to our kitchen ceiling. Great response to get him booked in, very polite and friendly and the did a great job. No idea how his price compares with others but makes a big difference to me when someone is easy to book and comes when they say they can! Will definitely contact again for any tricky jobs round the house.
Aston came last week to hang various pictures, hooks and a curtain rail. What a great find. Takes great pride in his work, punctual, obliging and a lovely guy. We will be sure to use him again when needed and have no hesitation in recommending him. You can reach him on 07490 947355.

Could not recommend Aston enough. Did wonderful work to smarten up our kitchen and fixed our shower door (we had thought we were going to have go replace our entire shower unit until he worked his magic). Lovely person and excellent service

?300 to refit a towel rail and loo roll holder?!

What did the work involve?

I'm currently in the throes of getting work done and am looking for, amongst others, (& see my other moans on here about unhelpful small businesses)handypeople to carry out a range of very small jobs. ?300 for what appears to be a small job - and spread over 2 days - seriously?!
Just like to add more feedback for Aston - he was really punctual and friendly and did a range of little jobs for me, and will be back to do more! I am really glad to have someone reliable and communicative to call on for the DIY that we are aren?t able to get done.
Aston came over to move a curtain rail for us on Tuesday. He was easy to get hold of and very punctual as everyone has already pointed out. I didn't get to meet him but my wife thought he was a great guy and I'm very happy with the work and price so will definitely get him back if we need anything else done
Aston did a great job: he was on time, really polite and friendly and made the best of a difficult and ambiguous fix. Isn?t recommend him to give honest assessments and quality work. We?ll certainly be asking him for help on future jobs.
Aston is the best handyman I know for over an year. I lost count how many times he came to fix or readjust the numbers of doors (internal and external) at my home which keep developing the problems for various reasons. Yesterday, he came to change my bathroom lock which was badly fitted in the first place by the builder who did the extension work at my flat, and replaced and repositioned the outdoor socket box. He is always punctual, works diligently and won't rush his job to finish off as quick as possible unlike some others. He checks and makes sure that I'm absolutely satisfied with his work before he leaves. I feel I can always rely on him as I know for sure he is conscientious with his work. I can highly recommend him as always. His contact number is 07490 947355.

Aston gets my recommendation: very good job done removing some shelves and installing a tv stand. Also really helpful in talking about how to do the job and what he could do and couldn?t do for the money.

It helps he?s a really nice guy too.

So this time I needed a curtain track put up and some mirrors properly put up and safe.

Contacted Aston as I have used him before and he fitted me in despite being really busy. To be honest I would rather wait for him than pick anyone else!! He seems to be able to turn his incredible skills to anything and again I had all my work done today by a lovely expert!! Aside from the jobs I had for him he replaced ceiling lights because he saw some were out. He makes sure you are pleased before he leaves too. I?m wary about people coming into my house but Aston is a really genuinely nice person as well as being the best handyman!!

Aston is great - Does a brilliant job with excellent attention to detail. He's just stripped out and disposed of a fitted wardrobe and shelves, and made good the walls where the plaster had come off and prepped them for the decorator. He's extremely tidy - I thought it would be quite dusty but he left the room immaculate. I'd used him for various other smaller jobs before and they've always been done to a very high standard.

On these recommendations we asked Aston to come and do a few jobs - hanging pictures, mirrors, curtain rails and fitting a blind. As well as resealing our shower and filling a few holes in our bathroom wall. He was great. Did everything we asked to a good standard and even hung our curtains! Would definitely recommend him.

On the face of it, putting a towel rail and loo roll holder on the wall would seem to be relatively quick and simple jobs.

Were there some complications which caused the charge to be so (what seems to be) extremely high?

How long did the job take?

Aston recently put up a wall-mounted bike holder; made good a damp-damaged section of paper lining and repainted; fixed some broken tiles on the front step; and replaced two door knobs and a latch for ?260. He was efficient, timely and tidy. I reckon it took him 5-6 hours, and all the materials were included in the price, so about ?40-50 p/hour (which ties in with the ?400 per day mentioned above). It's not cheap, but he did a great job and although I have paid less for similar before (although not as little as ?150)the overall experience and the standard of work wasn't as good as I got from Aston. NB - he prefers payment in cash so be prepared to visit the ATM.

Am I alone in thinking ?400 a day is excessive - who earns that much in most jobs? A lot of these tasks are simple and straightforward and the idea that cash in hand is publically asked for on here...? I seriously don't think we should be encouraging potential tax avoidance in this way - not as though customers are even getting a cut price deal! One to avoid.

    • I'm not in a bubble - if you read my post it says supportive of food bank info and community group info etc on the ED station board, where broad mix pass by when using train/bus/on foot. You're judging me but I can assure you I probably do FAR more for the local community than someone like you who simply posts something unhelpful in response to a conversation piece, asking for more opinions. Of course I know not everyone is middle class, I am working class worked up to middle class etc etc. I support various local groups, raise money for charity, give money to charity, give to foodbanks... the whole shebang. All I am saying is that there are ALSO other people who are interested in looking at the noticeboard for small business info around the area. Small businesses definitely need support and often make low profits and rely on advertising in places like these noticeboards. I'm entitled to an opinion and I am very honest, unlike some who want to say the right thing but if you question yourself what do YOU actually do for the good of others? Yes you may be Mother Teresa but my guess is... you aren't 😉 It is now fixed...
    • I think there is possibly a “broken windows syndrome” to these kind of boards: you know the idea that a broken window left untouched will give the impression that nobody cares, so encourages more vandalism? If boards are not maintained and the notices are way out of date it gives off that vibe. North Cross Road is a Southwark council licensed market, so does it not have a council employee in charge of it? Someone who arranges pitches and payments etc. If so, surely they would be the person to take responsibility? It only needs somebody to keep it clean and charge the posters regularly. Perhaps this can be suggested to the Goose Green councillors; it’s not my ward.
    • Exactly. I complained about them being broken for around 2 YEARS and they were repaired autumn (?) last year but only today when I emailed the councillor did he say he had "just received keys". I have no objection to a mix of community groups etc using the board but surely it should be open to all? Including local businesses, many of whom rely on word of mouth or boards like this - they don't often make much profit so it's great to support local business owners. It's not really my own interest as I am not a business owner... I am just reflecting what I would like to see - that I admit - as per my original post. p.s. the noticeboards I am talking about are empty - not used by anyone as the councillor has the key! Watch my words. They will be updated yearly if that and the info will go out of date. Last time the Northcross Rd one ended up with local councillor contact details, community centre contacts (useful I agree) and random flyers. Someone broke the glass and that was it for several years until I constantly emailed and James Barber - wonderful former councillor for the area - proactively supported, and we now have it fixed and a new one near ED station...
    • Voluntary organisations are probably not making use of the boards any more because of the state they are in. To the best of my knowledge a small number of people had keys originally, but I have no idea who has them now. I imagine it is going to take a fair amount of time to get all this properly up and running again, and then properly maintained.
