Are you sure that this is not a toad? - these only use water (i.e. ponds) for breeding and tend to live elsewhere in the garden at other times - brilliant for organic slug removal etc. (but don't then put down slug pellets - if they eat poisoned slugs they will themselves die). If it's large it is more likely to be a toad - and it's probably happy in your garden, which is why it's there at all.

We have one living in our garden. Don't know where he hangs out most of the time as we have a patio garden with just a few large bushes. But he seems to be thriving and has been here for three or four years. So I'd say just let him back out.
