m7post
Hi All, We were promised a hospital in return for the wanton demolition of half of the old one. Yet another year has passed with nothing but a huge waste land - what should be done? Should the Southwark PCT be allowed to maintain control of this public site / asset after such gross mismanagement? KalamityKel
What makes it "gross mismanagement"? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10582-missing-hospital-on-east-dulwich-grove/#findComment-309574 Share on other sites
m7post
How about just as a starter - demolishing a valuable public owned historic building even before they knew if they could secure the funding to build the promised Community Hospital to go in it's a place . . . . Mark
Please could you give us a link to a reference where someone promised a hospital in return for the wanton demolition of half of the old one. (Added - with a timescale.)I agree it's a complete waste of space at the moment and it would be good to see it used for something. How about an outdoor cinema this summer whilst we're waiting for something permanent to happen?[edited once] Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10582-missing-hospital-on-east-dulwich-grove/#findComment-309584 Share on other sites
Pecanpie
m7postAll of your past posts are political, i smell a sneeky campaign move. That type of thing can go down quite badly round these parts. sillywoman
Actually I do recall going to some event at the old EDH organised for local residents where they showed us a lovely glossy brochure and a model of how the 'new' wing of the hospital would look (to be built on the site of the now demolished & lamented 'onion' towers). It was to function as a physiotherapy unit plus a few other things I think? It does rather seem as though the project has been badly mismanaged if this is not now going to happen & we're to be left with a building site imperpetuity. m7post
Dear Pecanpie, By nature the human is a political animal - but what is you in particular you suspect? what are the "type of thing can go down quite badly round these parts" ? The only campaigning I'm doing here is reminding my fellow residents how they have been grotesquely failed in this particular instance - that those responsible should not get away with it scot-free - and we should all do something before we as a community loose that land - which is ours. What do you think of the situation as it stands?Best, Martin Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10582-missing-hospital-on-east-dulwich-grove/#findComment-309612 Share on other sites

minder
I/ve heard that East Dulwich Hospital could be closing altogether. This would be a catastrophe for all out-patients, my Dad included, who has Alzheimers. They have a specialist dementia unit and he sees a dementia nurse every so often. They are fantastic and have helped my Mum in lots of ways. EDmummy
With promises to cut government expenditure by all parties, I would suspect it unlikely that voting one way or the other would change any plans that may now be abandoned. Who knows, if bankers/business had not been so greedy the Govt may well have had the money to give the community what it had planned to offer.I too miss the building in my landscape but I will not miss the building's interior or odours! matthew123
With it being so close to King's it does seem money could be better spent elsewhere - nevertheless it's The impressive landmark in SE22 so hopefully some use is made of it rather than demolition. Peckhamgatecrasher
Don't agree, Matt123 - it's much easier to get a blood test or ecg at Dulwich than Kings. Here is an archive of the proposal page. You can still navigate the links on the left to show what the project proposal looked like:http://web.archive.org/web/20080604111023/www.dulwichcommunityhospital.nhs.uk/index.php?PID=0000000215The site says that the Southwark PCT proposal to build the new hospital was always subject to the approval of a Stage 1 business case by the Department of Health - did they ever get it? m7post
Dear Siduhe, Thank you for finding that - I think they did get as far as the stage 1 business case - but not much further back in 2006 - certainly not in anyway far enough to know the project would go through - and require such immediate demolition in October of that year.Best, Martin Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10582-missing-hospital-on-east-dulwich-grove/#findComment-309917 Share on other sites
BARA
Dulwich Community Hospital has been the subject of many Dulwich Community Council meetings. Save Dulwich Hospital Campaign has been going around for years and there has been community campaigns as recent as this year and all reported in both SL Press and Southwark News only 3 or so weeks ago. Stan Hardy and Ken Hoole are the main campaigners- both are members of the East Dulwich Society. Many local organisations representing all aspects of society have been actively involved in getting the new hospital built. Dulwich is used by Lambeth Residents as well. Currently it houses the Betty Alexander Unit(out patients for older people). Emma the Specialist Memory/Dementia Nurse is also based in the unit Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10582-missing-hospital-on-east-dulwich-grove/#findComment-309925 Share on other sites
east-of-the-Rye
I was rung (before Christmas?) by a someone doing a telephone survey re services that the "local population" would like to have on the site - she was from the PCT I think, but unfortuately i didn't get any proper details in order to work out who commissioned the survey. She explained that the idea is/was to have a polyclinic on the site and asked me whether I agreed with various ideas e.g. being able to have blood tests there. The first few ideas seemd fine, and would save you having to travel down to Kings. But then she started asking about other services that are often based at local GP's, e.g health visitors. I was about to say, yes, sounds alright, when I thought to ask her, "Would that mean that HV's would no longer be based at GP's" (as at least some of them are) She couldn't answer this, nor any of my other questions about the proposals, so I ended up saying "no" to a lot of what she said, as I could see that if I said yes, it would end up as being part of a consultation report saying something like "90% of the local population want all HV's and baby clinics to be based at the new Dulwich Polyclinic". I haven't heard anything further about the consultation. I was born in Dulwich Hospital, so would hate to see it go altogether, and there are some very good services run out of it, not least Seldoc! However, I don't think there is a need for a new hospital to be built, when we have one of the best hospitals in the country a 10 minute drive away.Perhaps they could build a maternity unit, they'd get a lot of business in the ED area!
