I was thinking about a Hoover as a friend has one but the reviews for drying on John Lewis are pretty shocking and I am ideally looking for something that can wash and dry a full load 2-3 times a week. It seems as though the older versions were better than the new ones.

In a world free of budget constraints I would buy only Miele kitchen goods, but at ?1299 their washer dryers are pretty expensive!

Currently thinking about Bosch as it's a Which? best buy and has good reviews on JL - http://www.johnlewis.com/bosch-wvg30461gb-freestanding-washer-dryer-8kg-wash-5kg-dry-load-a-energy-rating-1500rpm-spin-white/p1979720

Sorry, I also don't know when I became such a boring person!

That's correct Loz. I probably only need a machine with a 4kg wash capacity so my intention would be to buy a machine with say, 8kg wash capacity and 4kg drying capacity so that I can do one wash/dry load without having to empty half of the wet clothes before drying.
Ellem86, a Miele is best, but mid range Bosch are excellent value I would say, having had both. You should not put wet clothes in a drier, you will short it. A rapid spin for longer than 2 mins at 1600 and using a full spin after washing synthetics, when the spin is shortened, will reduce your drying time considerably.
